What a wonderful residential study visit! This week, Year 5 spent two busy days in and around Stratford upon Avon as guests of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Thursday’s itinerary included an action-packed drama workshop centred around A Midsummer Night’s Dream, culminating in a confident performance of a potted version of the play which included lines from the original script. Then came a visit to the Royal Shakespeare Company, taking in an exhibition of costumes and props from the RSC's archive. Finally, the girls enjoyed a walking tour of the town, taking in The Bard of Avon’s family home and school - as well as opportunities to compare authentic Tudor buildings with later replicas.
Friday involved an even deeper dive into the primary historical evidence that can inform our learning about past lives. Hands-on workshops at Mary Arden’s Farm - the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother - involved making wattle and daub screens, exploring the interior of a Tudor home, meeting farm animals common in the Elizabethan era, making lavender bags, learning about butter making, making sugar subtleties, and taking part in a group dance.
Congratulations, 5CJ and 5MC - you worked incredibly hard over two days, and you really did yourselves proud!

As part of their Religious Education curriculum, Years 1 and 2 visited Trinity Church Nottingham this week, which is based in the traditional setting of St Andrew's Church and also a contemporary conversion of the former Neales Auction House on Mansfield Road. Hosted by Trinity's youth pastor, Kate Cope, the girls enjoyed an interactive session which included a 'magical' Holy Bible; this started out with no pictures, but then images began to appear along with colours to illustrate the meaning of faith.
This was also an opportunity to compare new with old, for example identifying stained glass windows and a conventional altar in the 1870s building, both of which were absent from the modern premises. 1G and 2C loved visiting Trinity Church Nottingham and they would love to return!

This week, I was delighted to welcome the NGHS Juniors STEM Club to one of our Senior School physics laboratories to explore some of the properties of light and colour.
We mixed three different colours of light by varying degrees to produce a spectrum of different colours, hues and shades. We also enjoyed throwing some shapes in front of three offset lights to create exciting, multi-coloured shadow shapes before starting to create our own colour mixing spinners.
It was lovely to meet such enthusiasts for science - well done for asking such great questions, girls!
We’re pleased to announce a new partnership with SuperCamps - the UK’s premier holiday camp provider - for children aged 4-12.

This week, girls in Years 3-5 will bring home a Healthy Habit Tracker sheet to support their Autumn Term focus on cardiovascular fitness. There are a variety of exercises to complete each day, starting on 1st October and then colouring in the appropriate dates on their tracker.
We would welcome parents' support with this initiative, as the daily challenges will continue into the half term break. Perhaps join in with the challenges, or incorporate exercise into your holiday routine to help your daughter develop and understand the benefits of an active lifestyle?
After half term, sheets should be returned to class teachers for display - with house points awarded for the most creative ways used for recording fitness activities. Good luck, everyone! 👍
Hot on the heels of last week’s House pentathlon, we entered two teams in the Nottingham City Pentathlon event with one competing against girls and the other against boys. The attitude and determination on show was amazing, with some excellent performances recorded. We finished third out of the ten schools competing, and we have qualified for the finals later on this year. Excellent work, NGHS Juniors! 👌
Further afield and under leaden skies, our first Year 6 hockey match of the season was played against Repton on Wednesday. With just one practice session under our belts so far this term, it was truly a learning experience. The girls persevered, demonstrating plenty of resilience - however this was not to be their day as they faced much more experienced opponents. Well done to everyone, especially Marsha who was voted Player of the Match!
Finally, we wish good luck to our runners competing in the first of three cross country league races at Berry Hill Park this weekend. Competitors - don't forget to hand your tickets to Mrs Bloch at the end of the race, so that your finishing positions can be counted towards our team score!

We’re so proud of the diverse range of wonderful books available in the Junior library. This October, we’re marking Black History Month and celebrating Black brilliance with a selection of fabulous non-fiction titles, including the biographies of icons past and present, and books exploring the fight for civil and human rights.
Although there’s still much work to do, children’s fiction has come a long way in recent years in representing characters which reflect our global reality, and we now have many great stories that feature extraordinary Black individuals. Here are just a few of our recommendations:
