RECIPE RELAUNCH

Recently, I had the pleasure of sharing the finished illustrations for our NGHS Juniors RECIPE relaunch with the girls, and this new website seems like a good platform to share the new artwork with our parent community too.

Girls from all year groups were invited to enter a competition to design a character for the RECIPE.  Competition was stiff and the winners then worked with Mr James Brown, using digital art to reimagine their illustrations in their own image.

In assembly, the girls were presented with their own canvas copies of their artwork, which will be displayed across the school and will also appear in our new weekly achievement certificates.

NGHS Juniors annual Countryfile Ramble

Mr Cox

Yes, it's that time of year again!

Girls and teachers, it's time to dust off those walking boots or waterproof trainers, ready for our annual whole school sponsored walk in aid of BBC Children in Need on Friday 17 November!

In this year's Countryfile Ramble, we will return to the waterways of our great city.  Once again, Nottingham Express Transit (NET) will provide free tram travel for over 100 pupils and staff, so that we can prove it's possible to go for a good walk locally without the need for a car or crossing lots of roads.

For Key Stage 2 girls, the first leg of our 2023 walk will start at the Gregory Street tram stop, progressing along the Beeston Canal to a lunch stop at the Canalside Heritage Centre, at Beeston Lock.  The return leg will be along the River Trent, towards Meadows Embankment and a tram ride back to school.  The whole walk is on flat footpaths, with just one road crossing at the very end.  Depending on year group, girls will walk anything between half a mile and just under six miles - and our youngest girls will travel to starting points along the Beeston Canal via school minibus.

Sponsorship details have been emailed to families - please give generously to support this great British charity, and to encourage the girls in their challenge.  Thank you.

Anti-Bullying Week

To start Anti-Bullying Week (13-17 November), girls in the Junior School are encouraged to wear odd socks with their school uniform on Monday 13th November.  This is also our school photograph day, however there's no need to worry as the photos will be head and shoulders only!

The idea of ‘odd socks’ seeks to highlight that everyone is different, and everyone should be accepting of differences - and the overarching theme this year is ‘Make a Noise’, encouraging people to call out bullying behaviour.  Students across the UK will discuss how banter can turn into something more hurtful, and participate in activities to empower them to do something positive to counteract the harm that bullying can cause.  More information can be found here: https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week-2023-make-noise-about-bullying/odd-socks-day

As part of a GDST-wide Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) initiative, an event with Dr Zoe Williams will be streamed live to Year 6 and 7 students across our schools.  This event will focus on building self-confidence and promoting positive relationships.

The message of Anti-Bullying Week is not new to the girls at our school, but it is a great opportunity to home in on these ideas and reinforce the concepts.

Thank you for your support.

The Sheriff's Challenge 2023-2024

Miss Abbott

Let's get moving, girls!

The Sheriff’s Challenge is a series of activities which encourages children to run, walk, swim and cycle.  Each year, a different challenge is set with a ‘joint goal’ for schools to cumulatively reach plus individual pupil targets.  The overall aims of this project are:

This year, we have been challenged to cumulatively Walk or Run around the World – that’s 25,000 miles!  Pupils are set the individual challenge to walk or run 100 miles – that’s the equivalent of running four full marathons each over the academic year!

But worry not, we have already identified plenty of opportunities to get everyone involved in this project - not least by offering every girl from Year 3 upwards the chance to include her mileage from this year's BBC Countryfile Ramble which will take place on 17 November.  That's an approximate six-mile head start!

GDST Christmas card competition

A message from Mrs Crawshaw

Calling all aspiring artists!

The GDST Junior Christmas Card Competition for 2023 is now open to entries.

This year, we would like pupils to submit an A4 piece of artwork with a festive theme.  You may use paint, pastels, felt tip, pencil or collage.  Entries should be handed to form teachers by 09:00 on MONDAY 21 NOVEMBER, with first name and class stated clearly on the reverse (sorry, we will not be able to accept late entries).

One winner from EYFS and KS1, and one winner from KS2 will be submitted to the GDST, and our Chief Executive Cheryl Giovannoni will then select the overall winner.

The overall winner will receive a £50 gift voucher and her design will then feature on the GDST website and be available for all schools to use as their Christmas greetings email sign off.

Good luck, everybody!

POPPY APPEAL UPDATE

Well done to our Year 6 Sisters of Charity who operated our annual pop-up Poppy Shop at break times and lunchtimes this week - and an even bigger thank you to N and her mother who hand crocheted the limited edition wool poppies which were much admired by pupils and staff alike!

This year's appeal has raised £527.40 for the Poppy Appeal, which funds the work of the Royal British Legion as they support former service personnel and their families.

Thank you to everyone for their generosity.
