Charity and community

NGHS Juniors has a proud tradition of charitable endeavour and community outreach, supported by the generosity of our families and local businesses, and the hard work and creativity of our girls.

Whether it's one class going out for thirty minutes on a neighbourhood litter pick, a group of musicians busking all day for a local medical charity, or the whole school completing a sponsored walk or spelling challenge to raise funds for a national cause - ours is a culture that empowers girls to feel positive about making a difference through individual and team action, small and big.

ONGOING AND RECENT PROJECTS

Recycle with Michael

Twice yearly, we collect used clothing and footwear which is then resold or recycled by The Salvation Army.  The girls receive a small commission for their efforts, which our Sisters of Charity can then spend on whole school treats - e.g, in 2022, they paid for a magician to entertain everyone at our Platinum Jubilee picnic.

Nottingham Clean Champions

Being responsible neighbours starts early at NGHS Juniors.  Pupils can often be seen tidying and taking pride in the environment around school, with any waste collected being logged as voluntary service by Nottingham City Council.

Poppy Appeal 2023

The NGHS Juniors Pop-Up Poppy Shop is manned every year by our Year 6 Sisters of Charity, a team of girls who give up their time to spearhead our various appeals.

Harvest 2023

This year's Harvest Appeal supports the work of Guru Nanak's Mission, a Sikh-led project that provides hot meals and food parcels for the homeless or needy.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS - HIGHLIGHTS

Christmas Kindness

Working with The Salvation Army to provide educational stocking fillers for the children of local families in need.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

Collaborating with a pupil from the Mary Hare School for  deaf children, and raising £2,326 for Hearing Dogs through our annual sponsored spell.

MIND the Mental Health Charity

Working with MIND to understand the impact of loneliness and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and raising £2,290 for them through our annual sponsored spell.

Muslim Hands Open Kitchen

In 2022, Year 6 visited the Open Kitchen where volunteers feed and offer practical advice to homeless people of all faiths and none.  The girls then led a Harvest appeal to support its work.

PASIC

Our musicians have long supported PASIC, a local charity that supports local families facing childhood cancer.  Weekend busking in the city centref at Christmas is just one way in which they help to raise funds for this great cause.

The Friary

Year 6's Religious Education lessons in 2021 centred around the practical application of faith in real-life situations, and then focused the School's  efforts on collecting toiletries and high energy snacks and drinks for people coping with homelessness in winter.

The Royal British Legion

In 2018 - the centenary of the end of WW1 - our girls raised an amazing £6,200 through their sponsored 'Great Silence'.   Six girls, chosen for their community spirit, then represented the School at the Armistice commemorations in France and Belgium, and a further twelve girls visited and laid a wreath at the National Memorial Arboretum.

BBC Children in Need

Our annual Countryfile Ramble - a sponsored walk supported by NET trams - is a whole school fitness and wellbeing initiative.  As well as raising funds for Children in Need, this ongoing project sets out to prove that it is possible for families to enjoy lengthy walks within Nottingham's green corridors.

Radford Care Group

We are so proud of our musicians and singers who have worked hard to entertain and interact with the older generation in a local residential care home, including helping to raise funds for a state of the art extension.

RNLI

Girls from Year 5 - inspired by the novel Evie's War which includes a lifeboat rescue during WW1 - collected 5p coins to donate to this great cause when they visited Whitby's Lifeboat Museum in 2024.
