EXTRAORDINARY SUMMER EXHIBITION 2024

Families are invited to view this year's showcase of girls' CREATIVITY, POSITIVITY and EXCELLENCE from 2:45 pm this coming Friday, 14 June:

Year 3 visit Yorkshire

Mrs Bailey and Miss Baker

Year 3 have just returned from a stretching study visit to Yorkshire - this was the girls' very first residential trip, and therefore an important milestone in their school lives.  The packed two-day programme included archaeology and Viking saga workshops curated by the renowned Jorvik centre, an evening walking tour of the City of York, and an exploration of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

It was lovely to see everyone collaborating and extending friendship groups, sharing the novelty and responsibilities of dormitory life for one night, and enjoying opportunities to consolidate and apply  their learning beyond the classroom.  Working in unfamiliar environments and encouraging independence with changed routines are both important aspects of overnight stays and developing self-confidence, and we are delighted to say that EVERY pupil exceeded our expectations - well done, girls!

Well, wood you believe it?  🪚

Miss Duce and Mrs Astill

Girls in our Nursery class recently embarked on an exciting collaboration with Mr Fenn from the Senior School's Design & Technology department - over the coming weeks, they will spend time with him creating push-along toys!

This innovative project is all about developing resilience, language and vocabulary, as well as learning practical skills such as using sandpaper and simple tools. It will also involve opportunities to improve hand-eye coordination, as well as instilling a sense of respect as they learn the risks of using tools.

The girls are very excited about these lessons and are looking forward to playing with their finished products!

Mud, mud, glorious mud! 🦛

Miss Whitehead and Ms Wall

Our wonderful mud kitchen is always full of smiles and laughter, giving girls of all ages opportunities for role play and gloriously messy collaboration!  Please consider donating resources to us if you would like to rehome any old pots, pans or utensils that are past their best and could do with a second life in Upnah Wood.  We would especially welcome serving spoons, ladles, spatulas and whisks - thank you! 🙏

Two for one book deal 📖

NGHS alumna honours D-Day veterans

It was wonderful to see NGHS alumna and renowned mezzo soprano Emma Brown singing at this week's D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

We have fond memories from 2018 of Emma hosting our Junior School representatives at the Royal British Legion's WW1 centenary events in Belgium and  France, of her performance with our choir in 2019, and of our We'll meet again collaboration under the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020.  Emma Brown has a busy international schedule, but we hope to work with her again soon!

Would you like to broaden your daughter's horizons, interests or even vocabulary?  Perhaps she aspires to have a better age-appropriate grasp of current affairs or world issues - things to talk about or write about?  With a target audience of 6-12 years old, CBBC Newsround is a great way to spark interest and discussion, and could be a really positive addition to her daily routine.

By way of example, many Junior School pupils watched this Newsround Special in class on Thursday - a sensitive explanation of the events surrounding D-Day, with an especially touching reminder of contribution of women during World War Two:

The Music Makers are back!

Mr Rolfe’s much-loved summer school still has limited availability on both weeks:

15-19 July

22-26 July

The Music Makers have curated and delivered inspirational music courses for the past 16 years, to great acclaim from by parents and pupils alike.  Here, children from a range of ages and abilities learn, enjoy and excel in a secure and exciting environment, enriching their musical experience and developing new ideas together.

Beginners are enthused by starter instrumental lessons and fun workshops, and more experienced musicians are challenged with innovative activities.  Each weekly course concludes with a concert showcasing new or improved skills to families and friends.

Off you scoot! 🛴

Mrs Brown

Reward for good manners, kindness, working hard and positivity starts early at NGHS, as our Reception pupils discover whenever they earn cubes to fill their class jar.
At the end of the last half term, the girls cashed in the contents of their cube jar for a fun-filled scooter and bike afternoon - and an amazing time was had by all.

Are you a musical family? 🎶
