Please may I request that any dogs accompanying families at morning drop off or afternoon collection remain supervised on Baker Street and are not brought into the playground. Whilst we have a progressive approach towards animals at NGHS - and clear risk assessments and processes are in place for our two school dogs - we need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone on our premises.
Girls are welcome to come up the playground steps independently if you have a dog with you, and at the end of the day class teachers are happy to look out for you on Baker Street before sending your daughter down the steps to meet you. I trust this is helpful, and I thank you for your support.
This year's Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Rainbow Room during break times and lunchtimes as follows, with an NGHS librarian on hand to offer guidance and answer questions:
Fri 16 May – Nursery, Reception, Years 1-2
Mon 19 May – Years 5-6
Tue 20 May – Years 3-4
Wed 21 May – girls who missed their slot
due to clubs, fixtures or absence
There is a 3 for 2 promotions on all titles, and girls will need to bring money to school in a named purse for their purchases. We are unable to reserve books, however we can order additional copies of books if we sell out of popular titles.
Mrs Braud
Three of our Year 5 students proudly represented NGHS Juniors at a GDST Diversity and Inclusion event in London last week, joining 40 other pupils from across our GDST family of schools, from Birkenhead on Merseyside to Portsmouth on the south coast.
Through art, the girls explored the rich heritage and cultures of Somali and Traveller communities. Inspired by their experience, our delegates are now eager to take the lead in planning our very own Diversity and Inclusion day at school in June. In particular, the girls' enthusiasm for basket weaving at last Wednesday's event is certainly something they are keen to share.
Watch out for this incredible team, who are outstanding role models for our school! 👍
Sponsored Relay Walk
Miss Whitehead and Miss Wall
Join us for a special event on 5-6 September to mark 150 years of Nottingham Girls High School - a sponsored relay walk across Nottinghamshire which will include pupils and their families from both the Junior and Senior Schools.
This meaningful challenge will help to raise funds for the NGHS Bursary Fund, ensuring that future generations of girls can benefit from the opportunities provided by our school.
Sign up forms have been emailed to parents - please join us in this team endeavour, and together we can walk to make a difference for her future! 🙏
Writing to newspapers and magazines to have a letter published is a great way for children to share their passions and apply the communication skills which are taught in school.
Well done to Dina from 6C whose letter was recently chosen for publication in the May edition of Aquila. Having previously written an article for SPARK about beekeeping, Dina now has an national audience in one of the UK's best children's magazines!
BELOW: Our Key Stage 2 teachers are unanimous in their recommendation of Aquila, especially for girls who are reluctant readers, who need to widen their reading repertoire, or who wish to improve their general knowledge.
Mrs Sail
Congratulations to all of the pupils who enrolled on our recent Bikeability course; I am delighted to confirm our 100% pass rate! What a fabulous achievement, which will enable these girls to cycle with increased confidence and greater safety awareness in the future.
Bikeability will return in 2026 for Year 5 only, so we look forward to welcoming cyclists from our current Year 4 to the challenge. If your daughter cannot yet ride a bicycle or is still using stabilisers, this is something to work on between now and then - as children can only join the course if they are already reasonably confident on a bike and are ready to learn on the public highway.
On Tuesday evening, our Year 3-6 orchestras, choirs and musical ensembles delivered a remarkable concert at the SquirePAC - a night to remember that showcased the girls' musical excellence, diversity of repertoire and dedication to their craft.
With a very supportive audience and excellent guidance and leadership from Mrs Keys, Mr Browne, Mrs Coker, Mrs Bell, Mrs Seedhouse, Mr Skinner, Mr Rolfe, Mr Truman, Mrs Quine, Mr Robertson and Mr Costin, our performers earned numerous commendations for the quality of their music and the breadth of their skills.
Thank you to everyone who supports these events at school and at home, behind the scenes and on stage. 😀
Mrs Braud and Mr Cox
As the clock ticks down to Wednesday 3rd September, our oldest Junior School pupils are now starting to spend more time with their future teachers.
Girls in 6C and 6B have recently enjoyed lessons with Mr Brown and Ms Furness from the English Department, and with Mrs Homewood and Mr Cash who teach Religious Education and Physics respectively; this is all part of a carefully-curated and gradual shift to Key Stage 3 that serves to smooth the eventual move up to Senior School in the autumn.
Well done, girls - you have done yourselves proud, and we look forward to introducing you to more of the adults who will guide you through your next seven years at NGHS!
AN UPDATE
Well done to every girl who revised, applied her previous learning and tried her best in our annual charity sponsored spell, which is in aid of the RNLI to remember Mrs Sail's late husband, Grant - and thank you to everyone who has supported through sponsorship thus far. Class teachers are currently collating individual scores, and we look forward to sharing outcomes next week. Early results show excellent progress for many pupils since last year's challenge, with especially high marks in Reception.
We all enjoyed a lighthearted end to the week in Friday morning's assembly, when Mrs Astill, Mr Cox, Mrs Crabtree and Mrs Sail were challenged by our Year 6 Sisters of Charity to spell twenty tricky words in front of a live audience! Mrs Astill won the day for LUXTON; she was humble in victory and the three runners up were (mostly) gracious in defeat! 😂
It's not too late to support this good cause - we are still accepting pledges :
Miss Abbott
This year's U11 GDST Cricket Rally was hosted by our sister school in Northampton on a bright, sunny day. Under Mr Ashdown’s guidance, the NGHS Juniors team progressed from their pool, winning two games and losing one - which meant a quarter final match-up with Wimbledon. In a cagey affair, we eventually came out on top 224 runs to 217, and earned a place in the semi final! There we came up against an outstanding Notting Hill & Ealing High School team, going down 213 runs to 258. Notting Hill then went on to win the tournament overall.
Our day ended with a 3rd and 4th place play-off against South Hampstead. We succumbed 219 to 247 run loss, but up until the last couple of overs we were still in the game. Our RESILIENT girls have learnt lots and will be able to put this to good use in the Nottingham City finals after Half Term, and in the remaining friendly games of the Summer Term. Well done everyone!
Congratulations also go to girls from Years 3 and 4 who competed in this week’s inter-house pentathlon, throwing, running and jumping to score as many points as possible personal and team glory!
The girls were also attempting to beat their own personal scores from last September in the ‘me v me’ challenge; our summer pentathlon is all about self-improvement by working on different components of fitness across the academic year.
Well done to LUXTON who improved by a massive 439 points, and to the following individuals for their top achievements:
YEAR 3
1st Zairah (+73 points)
2nd Marni (+69 points)
3rd Tilly (+60 points)
YEAR 4
1st Penelope (+100 points)
2nd Johanna (+65 points)
3rd Florence (+57 points)
