Reception visit the Central Library 📚

Our Reception class loved their World Book Day visit to Nottingham's fabulous new Central Library in March - so much so, that they made a return trip on this week which included a lovely walk tram ride on a sunny afternoon.

The theme of this visit was traditional tales, as well as building confidence in learning outside of the classroom and working with a librarian.  The girls enjoyed interactive stories in the immersive room, including Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Hare and the Turtle, as well as finding their own stories to read.

Mrs Brown was super impressed by her class following instructions so carefully on the tram, walking so beautifully through the Market Square, and browsing so thoughtfully in the library.  Well done, everyone!

Year 5 in North Yorkshire 🌊

This week saw three key out-of-class curriculum experiences for Year 5 in North Yorkshire - a history study visit to Eden Camp, a geography field trip to Robin Hood’s Bay, and an English curriculum walking tour of Whitby.

Eden Camp is a modern history museum, housed in a former prisoner of war camp.  Here, the girls consolidated last term’s WW2 topic with a recap of the role of women on the home front, and the experiences of families affected by bombing, rationing and evacuation.

As well as developing their map reading skills, the girls’ current geography topic involves a study of how bays and headlands erode over time, and the nature of coastal defences.  The beach at Boggle Hole and the Cleveland Way coastal path to Robin Hood’s Bay therefore provided opportunities for them to see examples of land slips and sea walls up close, to visit a community under threat of coastal erosion, and to navigate a walking route using map reading skills learnt in class.

The final morning, in Whitby, had an equally important learning angle for our Year 5 girls.  Their current English texts  -  Room 13 by Robert Swindells and Evie's War by Holly Webb - are set in the town, and seeing the places mentioned in books will help them in their upcoming reading and writing tasks.

Evie's War and the work of the RNLI

In their own time, our Year 5 students are currently reading Evie's War, by Holly Webb.  One early episode in the book - meticulously researched by the author Holly Webb - is the real-life sinking in 1914 of the WW1 hospital ship Rohilla off the coast of Whitby.  Enthused by accounts of bravery shown by the local lifeboat crews and by their Easter Reading Journal task of researching the present day RNLI, the girls collected £115.50 for this great cause which was gratefully received at the Lifeboat Station when they visited Whitby.

Thank you to everyone who helped the girls in this endeavour, especially to Mrs Christine Day (grandmother of Olivia in 5JC) and her customers at Flicks Hair whose generosity really helped to boost the collection.

Thanks also go to the staff at Whitby RNLI who heard about Year 5's donation and invited them to view artefacts relating to the saving of passengers and crew from the SS Rohilla.

Above:  Volunteers  assisting with the rescue of passengers from the SS Rohilla, after she ran aground off Whitby in December 1914.  Survivors clung to the wreck for nearly three days as the ship broke its back on the rocks, with lifeboats barely able to reach the wreck.

Year 6 at Dobroyd Castle 🛶

Year 6 have just spent three days at Dobroyd Castle's Robin Wood Activity Centre in Lancashire, where they have faced a variety of personal and team challenges such as climbing, caving, zip-wire and canoeing - all of which involved venturing beyond their own comfort zones to achieve success.

From crossing the legendary 'piranha pool' to escaping from a haunted dungeon, our oldest pupils tested their problem solving and collaborative skills to the max.  The instructors noted how supportive and encouraging the girls were of one another; their communication skills and adventurous responses to challenges were especially impressive.

Year 6, you can be very proud of your spirited approach to challenges this week, your behaviour in sometimes testing conditions, and your manners when working and living with others.  Well done, girls!

SPONSORED SPELL FINAL REMINDER 🔤🐝

The coming week will see the culmination of our recent focus on spelling revision, consolidating and recapping what we have learnt this year, and preparing to showcase effort, progress and attainment through our traditional Summer Term Sponsored Spell.

Depending on age, the girls will face challenges ranging from 10 to 100 words this week, in installments for those year groups tackling the longest lists.  Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to support their daughters with informal revision, and dipped into their pockets for sponsorship - with end-of-year assessments due in some year groups later this term, these efforts will certainly pay off.

Here's a final opportunity to sponsor your daughter if you have not already done so:

And here's the information from the 19 April edition of SPARK, just in case you missed it:

Mini marathon 🏃🏾‍♀️

Congratulations to everyone - from Nursery to Year 6 - who took part in last week's TCS London Mini Marathon on the Forest Recreation Ground!  It was lovely to see girls demonstrating collective RESILIENCE and POSITIVITY, encouraging their classmates and house comrades to walk or run non-stop and as far as possible for 26 minutes.

This mammoth team effort also helped to clock up another 274 miles for this year's Sheriff's Challenge, bringing our average up to 26.5 miles per pupil and putting us in second place thus far.  What a super achievement all-round - with a special mention to Mrs Resch who also completed the course whilst pushing a wheelchair!  💪

Don't forget to Recycle with Michael! ♻️

Thank you to everyone who has already requested sacks for this project that helps us to save unwanted textiles from landfill.

This term's collection  of used clothing and footwear will take place during the week beginning 20 May, but you can request sacks now and we will send them home from Tuesday.  Items do not have to be in re-saleable condition; anything that is unsuitable for the Salvation Army's charity shops will still be recycled responsibly!

Pieces of eight in Year 1 🏴‍☠️

As an introduction to their current Pirates topic, Year 1 recently enjoyed a drama workshop with a leading expert in living history.

Activities included going on a 'pirate adventure' to several destinations, finding treasure and even seeing penguins dancing in Polynesia.  This was then followed up with opportunities to write a pirate adventure in English lessons, with arrrghh topic crossing over into mathematics, science and geography too!   🦜

Do as you're instructed, Mrs Crabtree!

In English lessons this half term, Year 2 have been learning how to write instructions.  Most recently, they have worked in teams to create a mini obstacle course with directions for Mrs Crabtree to complete it - a great way to develop communication and collaborative skills, and tremendous fun too!

Meanwhile in topic lessons, Year 2 are also learning about the history of aviation, including researching the achievements of the Wright Brothers and creating posters about them using PicEdu software.  This has been an interesting way to combine computing with humanities, with the girls very engaged and excited about the finished products.

Scholastic Book Fair

We are pleased to announce that this year's Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Rainbow Room during break times and lunchtimes as follows, with a librarian on hand to offer guidance:

Fri 17 May – Nur sery/Reception/Years 1-2

Mon 20 May – Years 5-6

Tue 21 May – Years 3-4

Wed 22 May – girls who missed their slot due to clubs or absence

There will be a 3 for 2 promotion on all titles, and girls will need to bring money to school in a named purse for their purchases.  Sorry, we are unable to reserve books, however we can order additional copies of books if we sell out of popular titles.

Go, Lottie!

Lottie from 5JC will take to the stage during the Half Term break at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal in a performance of Kipps.

With music and lyrics written by Stiles & Drewe (of stage musical Mary Poppins fame), the story follows orphan Arthur Kipps as he inherits a fortune and falls in love - with many a comedic moments - definitely fun for the whole family!

Lottie will be in the Wednesday matinee, Thursday evening and Saturday evening performances - we wish her the very best of luck!
