We are delighted to launch a new occasional feature in SPARK. Finding her Voice shines a spotlight on the achievements of our girls beyond the classroom - moments where they’ve taken the skills, values and confidence nurtured at school and applied them in exciting, real-world ways, and then shared those high points with their classmates.
Whether it’s mastering a new hobby, showing leadership in their community or demonstrating resilience in a personal challenge, Finding her Voice is about celebrating how our pupils are growing into strong, capable young women. Each story reminds us that learning doesn’t stop at the playground gate - it continues wherever our girls choose to make their mark.
In our opening piece, we celebrate the recent adventures of Marni from Year 4:
A Weekend of Dancing Determination
Last weekend, Marni helped to light up the stage at the Nottingham Arts Theatre, performing not once but three times as part of the dazzling DancinMotion showcase.
Marni took part in two performances on Saturday and one on Sunday, dancing in four routines in every show; it was clear how much she loved performing. Her programme featured an elegant ballet piece to Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas, followed by a lively tap routine to Cruella De Vil. She also switched up the pace with an acrobatic/free-style number set to Papi by Jennifer Lopez, before joining the full company for a finale to Titanium.
Miss Becky and Miss Talia from DancinMotion shared how proud they were of Marni and all of the participating dancers. Well done, Marni and friends - what a fantastic achievement!

If you have a recent FINDING HER VOICE story to tell, please email your daughter's form teacher with details and photos which you consent to being shared in class or in this weekly online newsletter.

Apparently it is! Chess is officially recognised as a sport by organisations such as the International Olympic Committee, and many countries classify it as one. It's a sport because it involves intense mental strategy, physical endurance for long tournaments, competition and strict rules.
So when Mr Cox told me that he could not attend this week's league match for the Nottinghamshire Primary Schools Chess Association, I leapt at the chance to take his place and went along to investigate ...
First, I drove the minibus to the fixture - with nine eager players on board who discussed strategy with their coach, Mr Padvis. It was sporty before we'd even arrived!
Then the girls warmed up, playing friendlies and relaxing into the game - also very sporty. Three rounds of intense chess against the clock followed, as they demonstrated RESILIENCE by playing against complete strangers with differing levels of experience - how sporty was that?!
Mixed success - we won some, we lost some. Oh my goodness, this event at The Elms was so sporty that I was itching to blow my whistle and start shouting words of encouragement (alas, not allowed in chess - once a game starts, the player is on her own).
Finally, a celebration of overall team achievement and reflection back at school on how to improve our games next time. In a tough field of thirteen teams, we say well done for being such good sports, girls!

Earlier this week, members of our Year 5-6 Art Club collaborated to create a beautiful set of NGHS150-inspired decorations for our Christmas tree at St Mary's Church in Nottingham's Lace Market, which will will be enjoyed by worshippers and visitors throughout the festive season. Each bauble is unique, featuring past alumnae and celebrating 150 years of educating girls:
On Friday, helpers from Year 4 then had the pleasure of placing the decorations on the tree at St Mary's. It really does look splendid, so well done to everyone involved in this annual tradition!

Yet another busy week in PE and sport! Saturday saw our cross country team battling the wind, cold and rain in the second round of the County league. There were some great performances, including a 7th (out of 70 runners) for Katharina R, which more than helped us to deliver a very good 31-point score so that NGHS Juniors finished 2nd on the day 🙌
This saw us creep up a place into overall 3rd position, by a single point! There will be all to play for in the final round on Saturday 13th December - come on, girls!
Back at school, Years 3-4 completed their netball block with an inter-House competition. Matches were close but fair, and we congratulate the players from LUXTON who came out on top. Well done to everyone who showcased the skills that they have learnt over the course of the term. We now look forward to seeing these girls start their hockey block next week; please don’t forget mouthguards for every lesson, 3B and 4B!
Years 5-6 also finished a nine-week block of sport - in their case, capping off with an inter-House hockey competition. Some very good play and application of skills saw BOLTON victorious, so congratulations go to everybody involved. Next week, 5JC, 5MC, 6B, 6W will switch their focus to netball in PE lessons.

In PSHE lessons, Year 5 are currently learning about life in the wider world. This has involved exploring the ideas of sexism and gender stereotyping, using deeper thinking skills to ascertain why some television advertisements have been banned or withdrawn in the UK. For example, they watched and discussed a Volkswagen commercial which stereotyped men as adventurers and women as homemakers and babysitters.
Last week's PSHE sessions also looked at how and when gender stereotyping can be instilled in children, and how - if left unchecked - it can limit opportunities for both boys and girls.
This clip made for especially interesting viewing, and inspired Year 5 to see if stereotyping presents as much of a problem in our all-girls school as it did in this co-ed classroom:
To do this, 5MC and 5JC asked their EYFS reading buddies to draw pictures of firefighters, doctors and vets, and then asked them to name the characters. Year 5 heard OVERWHELMINGLY ENCOURAGING RESPONSES, and they then enjoyed sharing their own Say no to stereotyping posters which they had created beforehand.

Year 4 are continuing their learning journey with our resident bees. Last year, the girls helped to install the Upnah Wood hive, welcoming the bees when they arrived and transferring them into their new home.
Most recently, they have enjoyed extracting honey from the frames and seeing it up close – and there was lots of it! Next week they will move on to bottling and labelling, meaning they will have been involved in the whole process from establishing a colony to having honey on the table. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our busy bees!

On Tuesday, girls from our Years 5-6 STEM Club were hosted in Senior School by Mrs Wilson-Wood, Head of Chemistry. This was a very interesting workshop which involved creating and decorating snowmen using bicarbonate of soda and water, and then observing what happened as vinegar was added to 'melt' them:
Vinegar is an acid, and bicarbonate of soda is an alkali, which is the opposite. The girls learnt that when the two combine, a chemical reaction happens and a gas called carbon dioxide is released. This made the bubbles of gas that they saw fizzing the snowman away!
Below: With adult supervision, this is an experiment which anyone can try at home!
