Mrs Fowler and the NGHS Juniors teaching team
With the festive season upon us, we repeat our previous request for pupils not to bring personal gifts into school for other children, and to refrain from organising 'Secret Santa' activities on school premises. In our experience, these well-meant initiatives can sometimes end in unintentional upset, with some children feeling left out or 'short-changed', and with gifts lost or damaged. An element of one-upmanship can also develop, and some families may not wish to spend as much as others.
Our tradition of exchanging Christmas cards at school continues, and our Rainbow Room post box is open until 9am on Thursday 18th December, however we would ask that these do not contain gifts or food items.
There will of course be occasions when families do wish to exchange personal gifts. Please feel free to supervise this yourselves at the school gate, whilst ensuring any children's presents are taken straight home and not brought into classrooms. Thank you.
All parents are invited to our annual Carol Service at St Mary's Church in the Lace Market on the last day of term, on Friday 19 December - this event starts at 10:30 and should finish at 11:30.
This is a special opportunity for girls from Reception to Year 6 - of all faiths and none - to come together at a memorable occasion to mark the end of term and the beginning of Christmas celebrations.
Timings for the final day of term are as follows:
The Dining Hall will open as usual from 07:50 and will offer a festive breakfast. Our catering team will attend church with the girls, so the Dining Hall will close promptly when service ends.
Pupils should arrive at school for morning registration on Friday 19th as usual.
Girls in Reception to Year 3 will travel to St Mary's Church by school transport, and older girls will walk. All girls should wear their usual school uniform, with NGHS school coats. Coins in coat pockets for the customary end-of-service collection will be much appreciated - this will be in aid of Equation, a local charity that works to reduce the impact of domestic abuse and gender inequality.
For safeguarding reasons, all pupils will return to school after the service.
Parents may collect girls at the end of term, at 12:15. School buses will depart at 12:30 - kindly note that there will be no After School Club provision on the last day of term.

Year 2 worked hard this week in their art and design lesson to create some very eye catching collages, using watercolours for backgrounds and then creating festive penguins using different papers. The girls very much enjoyed creating these pictures - excellent work, 2C! 👍🏻
Above - the Lace Market Carol Service - not to be confused with the NGHS Carol Service on Friday 19 December - is an annual community event, supported by city centre businesses. All are welcome.

This week, pupils from Years 3–6 took to the stage in the Squire Performing Arts Centre for our annual Winter Lights Concert. After three months of preparation, the girls delivered confident and enjoyable performances that reflected their hard work and growing musicianship.
Ensembles from across the age groups shared a varied programme, with each item demonstrating teamwork, developing technical skills and the positive musical culture within the school. Our thanks go to the Music Department for directing the evening, as well as the Administration and Marketing teams for their support. We are also grateful to technicians Abby and Sarah for ensuring everything ran smoothly, to Mr Cox for guiding the audience through the programme, and the many peripatetic staff and teachers who helped behind the scenes and on stage.
Events like this are also only possible through the commitment of the students and the continued support of families. We appreciate all who encourage regular practice and group music-making - thank you!
Highlights from the concert will appear in our end-of-term video showcase, Tuning Up, which will be available in next week's SPARK.
In the coming days. we we look forward to a busy schedule, including a Dining Hall concert on Wednesday morning (8–8.30am - all welcome), singing visits to Radford Care Group and St Mary’s Church, and a second choir appearance at St Mary's for Friday's school carol service.

At Year 3 Art Club this week, we we used pastels and black paper to create beautiful Christmas trees set against a snowy night-time background. The girls worked carefully and were rightly proud of the end results - well done! Year 1 and 2 will embark on a similar project next week 😊
If you happen to be in Nottingham this Saturday, please pop along to support our intrepid NGHS buskers who will be singing and strumming their hearts out to raise funds for PASIC - the Parents' Association for Seriously Ill Children:

Mothers of girls in Years 3 to 6 should by now have received an invitation to our first ever mums and daughter’s event! Research shows that the most positive sporting role model for young girls is usually a female adult in their family. Please, do join us on Wednesday 14 January to see and experience our wonderful 1875 Sports Centre, which was recently subject to a multi-million-pound refurbishment. Enjoy a game of badminton or netball, use the fitness suite, or try your hand at Zumba or yoga in the dance studio. Spaces are filling up fast, so do book one of the two slots available to secure a place - aunties and other female relatives are of course welcome too!
Thursday morning's inter-house Christmas Cardio Reindeer Run completed this term's Y3-Y6 cardiovascular fitness theme - congratulations to BOLTON who completed the most laps in the permitted time. This required RESILIENCE and INITIATIVE, and good old-fashioned teamwork - well done, girls!
On Thursday afternoon, girls from Years 5-6 competed tin the City finals of this year’s sports hall athletics competition at Harvey Hadden Sports Village. Pitted against against mixed boys and girls teams, our NGHS athletes had to throw, run and jump - and then run some more! Lots of REILIENCE was evident, as the girls achieved 7th place overall. This a fantastic effort - every team member can be proud of herself!
This coming weekend, we wish good luck to our cross country runners in the final league race of the season, which will take place at Berry Hill Park on Saturday morning. We currently lie in 3rd, just one point ahead of 4th - so everything to play for!
I look forward to welcoming everyone back to PE and Sport in the new year, and to starting the Year 3 and Year 4 swimming programme on the first Friday of term, 9th January.
⛷️ SKI FITNESS TRAINING ⛷️
Girls attending the GDST ski trip in March are reminded that weekly fitness sessions commence on Friday 12 January at 8am prompt.
Please come straight to the Fitness Suite, via the playground

On Wednesday, Year 4 welcomed Mrs Seedhouse, one of our music teachers and an alumna of Nottingham Girls' High School! The girls listened with interest as she shared memories of her time at NGHS, including 'rainbow sponge pudding', the long walk to lunch in the previous dining hall, and having to take a bus to offsite playing fields. She reflected that the most enjoyable part of school was making lasting friendships.
As Year 4 were in the midst of their own preparations for this year's Winter Lights Concert, 4B quizzed Mrs Seedhouse about her own musical experiences. She explained that she began learning the violin early and later took up the piano at the age of seventeen. The violin has remained her instrument of choice, and this is what she teaches in the Junior School. She encouraged everyone to take up an instrument early and mentioned that she stayed in touch with her music teacher for many years, which helped nurture her love of music.
Mrs Seedhouse also described how in her school days, performances were held in the Senior School hall as there was no performing arts centre. For church services, the school community gathered at All Saints Church nearby.
We thank Mrs Seedhouse for taking the time to share her experiences with us - interrogating a primary source of historical evidence in the form of an eyewitness is a great way to explore how and why things change over time.

Finding her Voice shines a spotlight on the achievements of our girls beyond the classroom - moments where they’ve taken the skills, values and confidence nurtured at school and applied them in exciting, real-world ways, and then shared those high points with their classmates.
Otsukaresama desu, Olivia!
This week, This week we’re delighted to celebrate Olivia from Year 3, whose recent achievements beyond the classroom are the subject of great pride ...
Olivia has been dedicated to Aikido, a self-defence martial art that builds confidence, focus and respect, since the age of five. In just two years, she has completed the Little Dragon Programme - finishing on brown belt - and she has now progressed to a junior group where she is already working at full blue belt. Along the way, she has earned an impressive collection of badges for challenges such as 100 backdrops, keeping her Gi in top condition, and memorising the student creed.
Training four times a week, Olivia’s commitment is remarkable - and this term she has taken a huge step up by becoming an Assistant Instructor. After completing extra training, she now help to lead warm-ups, supports younger students, demonstrates techniques and acts as a positive role model in the Dojo.
Perhaps most inspiring is her personal journey. Aikido once felt overwhelming, but through perseverance and courage Olivia has grown in confidence, now using her own experience to encourage nervous newcomers and the Little Dragons she supports.
This is a wonderful example of determination and kindness - well done, Olivia, and thank you for taking the time to tell your classmates about your passion!
Mrs Crawshaw
Year 5 recently participated in an exciting and thought-provoking STEM with Wings cyber workshop hosted by the RAF Youth & STEM team. This session focused on helping young people to stay safe online, beginning with how to spot a strong password and how to tell whether an email is trustworthy or possibly a scam. Our girls were were quick to put their detective skills to the test!
They also discovered the fascinating world of ethical hackers - the 'good guys' who work hard behind the scenes to protect individuals and companies from cyber-attacks. It was great to learn about the importance of these roles, and how digital safety relates to all aspects of our lives.
Importantly, the workshop highlighted the importance of women in STEM - we were especially inspired by female role models from the RAF team who spoke passionately about careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.
To finish, the girls had a few minutes to designed their own digital superhero - a character with powers to keep the online world safe. 5MC and 5JC's ideas were imaginative, thoughtful and - in true Year 5 fashion - wonderfully creative!

The annual tradition of Year 6 girls donating a decoration to the NGHS Juniors Christmas tree continues! This is a lovely way for girls to mark their final festive season with us, and many of them enjoy returning in subsequent years to see their baubles still cherished and on display. Thank you for your donations, 6B and 6W - the tree looks magnificent 💙
