On Thursday, the judges for our NGHS 150 Challenge interviewed girls whose entries had been shortlisted for recognition under themes such as charity, a love of language and artistry; they were unanimous in their praise for excellent use of creativity.
An EXTRAORDINARY AWARDS assembly was then held on Friday to celebrate the culmination of this challenge, in which girls embraced opportunities to showcase their talents and interests, and learn new skills. Awards and prizes were given for Excellence and Highly Commended, and some girls were also awarded judges’ special prizes for their oratory skills when sharing their 150 challenge with the panel:

On Tuesday, our youngest pupils visited Chatsworth in Derbyshire ...
Nursery had a super time! To support the girls' autumn topic, we went into the woodland and listened to trees using stethoscopes - it was fascinating to hear water gurgling around the bottom of trunks as it was drawn up through the roots. Everyone enjoyed creating a home for woodland animals and a nature picture using foraged sticks leaves and acorns, and there was also an opportunity to explore the concepts of floating and sinking objects in a small stream.
Our afternoon highlight was a visit to the farmyard, where we met piglets, horses and goats, ending our grand day out with playtime on the tractors!
Meanwhile and elsewhere on the vast Chatsworth Estate, our Reception class also had fabulous experiences as they discovered and identified plants and trees that have existed since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The girls explored contrasting habitats which included a rock garden, bog garden, woodland and wildflower meadow, and even spotted fossils of sea creatures from 350 million years ago.
Well done, everyone - you were super observant and you asked really good questions!
This day at Chatsworth is a brand new addition to our curriculum. At NGHS Juniors, we're really proud of our offering of field trips and study visits that extend girls' learning beyond the classroom. These enrichment and consolidation opportunities are constantly reviewed and updated by our teaching team, with new additions appearing as topics evolve:
Alongside their Elizabethan Golden Age history topic, Year 5 are currently learning how to build atmosphere and tension in creative writing. Techniques explored in English lessons include the art of slow build-up, appealing to the five senses, and hinting at character' personalities and motivations through their settings, actions and dialogue.
Having already drafted an account of a fictional character facing a challenge in a grand Tudor house, the girls will soon visit the real-life Hardwick Hall to see the interiors and grounds of a stately home from that period. Having taken notes and developed a better understanding of these settings, they will then return to their Chromebooks to edit and improve their compositions in class.
We look forward to seeing the results of your immersive experience, girls!
Mr Rolfe
On Friday, a month’s worth of music and drama studies came to life as we celebrated Black History Month in style. Years 4, 5 and 6 have been experiencing the music of the American Civil Rights Movement, in which song and performance were used to promote self-belief and challenge prejudice and racism.
A lively Open Mic session in the dining hall featured covers of songs by famous Black musicians, with Junior School pupils cheering on their peers and enjoying the performances.
In assembly, Years 4 to 6 performed two powerful anti-racism songs and spoke about what they have learnt recently about courage, equality and the power of music to create change. Mrs McDowell then presented films created by Years 5 and 6, in which they re-enacted and retold the stories of historic Black figures who challenged discrimination.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to these inspiring events that brought together our school community.
Mrs Braud and Mrs Wood were recently delighted to announce this year's appointments:

Nottingham City Netball Club is looking for new players from age 6 upwards! All training takes place after school on Tuesdays or Wednesdays in the NGHS Sports Hall and with fees set at just £5 per session, this is a great way to improve fitness and develop a love for a very sociable game that will last girls through Senior School, university and beyond.
Players who attend After School Club before coaching are taken to the Sports Hall by an NGHS member of staff. All age groups participate in tournaments and local leagues, and are supervised by qualified DBS-checked instructors and umpires who are all first aid trained.
Miss Spray is currently working on an upcycling project which will support a rejuvenation of Reception's 'home corner', the setting in which girls enjoy role play with the help of objects from everyday life. Interaction and cooperation in a realistic environment helps young children to develop skills and increase confidence in key areas such as dexterity, creativity, personal independence and empathy.
Please email Miss Spray r.spray2@not.gdst.net if you would like to re-home any of the following items:
toaster * kettle * storage cannisters/Tupperware
cooking utensils from different cultures
baskets * trays * mug tree * fruit bowl
curtains * rug * wallpaper * cushions
coffee table/nest of tables * photo frames
pendant lampshades * table lamp
Moses basket and stand / crib * baby changing mat
small sofa/armchairs * bedside table * child size wardrobe or similar

Electrical items do not need to work - we will remove all cables and make them safe for play.
Soft furnishings should have current fire retardancy labels.
Thank you!
Year 5 vs Year 6
Mrs Braud, Mrs Wood, Mrs Crawshaw, Mr Cox
We look forward to seeing the results of the Times Tables Rock Stars tournament which started this week and which will run through Half Term to 31 October.
Competition is already stiff, with one Year 6 pupil's mission clearly stated on her hand for all to see (!) - but the scoreboard shows that Year 5 are thus far undaunted and are determined to give 6B and 6W a run for their money. Well done, Katharina and Imogen for leading the charge! 👍
Mrs Braud and Mrs Wood
In science lessons, Year 6 are currently studying the classification of plants. Taking their learning to a practical level, this has involved identifying and observing different species in our school grounds and greenhouse, and using a microscope to delve deeper.
This is just one of the increasingly opportunities which 6B and 6W will have over the coming months to work with Senior School staff who will soon become familiar faces in Key Stage 3, smoothing the transition to secondary education. We thank Mrs Deamer from the Biology Department for hosting us and answering so many questions!
Join us for a special evening - exclusive to NGHS parents - a Global Wine Tour in partnership with Weavers Wines, raising money for our Bursary Fund.
Bring friends and enjoy a guided tasting of exceptional wines from around the world, accompanied by delicious nibbles. Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply enjoy a good glass, this is an event not to be missed - with opportunities to places or make purchases on evening.
£30 per person
All proceeds will support our Her Future, Your Gift bursary campaign, helping more girls to benefit from an NGHS education.
Isabel, Aleesha, Pippa - our Year 6 Sisters of Charity
Thank you to everyone who supported our 2025 Harvest Appeal, which marks 150 years of NGHS educating girls by supporting the amazing work of Nottingham Central Women's Aid.
A representative from this organisation will visit school after Half Term to accept our donations, and to tell Year 6 about their charity during one of our PSHE lessons.
Mr Rolfe
Congratulations to everyone who took part in last week’s music competition, in which all performers were highly commended for their exceptional talent, dedication and passion.
The standard of performances this year was very high - especially from our youngest entrants, whose skill and confidence shone brightly throughout the event.
We are delighted to share the results, along with the names of those selected to perform in our Grand Final on Tuesday, 11th November at 5.30pm. Full details will follow shortly.

Miss Abbott
What a brilliant Forest Fun Run we had on Thursday, as part of our work on cardiovascular fitness this term. Everyone took it in their stride (pun intended!) and there were some amazing performances - from our individual and team winners who demonstrated EXCELLENCE, to those who ran and encouraged others with EMPATHY and those who just kept through RESILIENCE.
Huge congratulations to everyone who took part, and to Luxton and Bolton who were victorious in the Y3-Y4 and Y5-Y6 age groups respectively. And well done to Bolton who managed a clean sweep of the top 3 in Y5-Y6!
Please don’t forget that girls in Y3-Y5 have their 30 Day Cardio Challenge to complete over the month of October. Perhaps this might inspire you to exercise alongside your daughter and go for walks or bike rides to make the most of the autumnal weather? However you exercise, have fun, stay healthy and have a relaxing half term.
10-14 November (second week back, after Half Term)
10-14 November is Anti-Bullying Week. Girls are invited to wear ‘odd socks’ as part of the national event Monday 10th to celebrate diversity and uniqueness, and to remind everyone to stand up for the power of good over bullying behaviour. That Monday will also be your daughter’s school photograph day, so full smart uniform must be worn for the head and shoulders shot! Further learning events will take place throughout the week, culminating in a non-uniform or pyjama day on Friday 14th for our annual Children in Need appeal. Full details to follow!
Tables at our annual Christmas Fair are £25 each, to support the NGHS Bursary Fund, with traders keeping any profits made.
Stalls can sell a variety of gifts, decorations, homewares, etc – anything edible must be nut-free with ingredients and allergens clearly labelled. We also recommend selling items that are not too heavy, large or fragile – so that they can be taken home easily in a school bag.
Email events@not.gdst.net to enquire or book.
