Mrs Fowler
Welcome to a brand new academic year - our classrooms are already buzzing with activity and expectation! I have been truly impressed by the creativity demonstrated across all age groups in our NGHS 150 Junior Challenge - the range of skills and passions exhibited has been astounding, and I look forward to confirming the date of our exhibition. Coupled with seeing girls rising to the challenges of settling into new year groups and working to even higher academic, sporting and pastoral expectations, it has been a real pleasure touring classes during our first eight days back at school. Thank you to every parent who managed to join us for 'welcome meetings' this week too; I look forward to working with you over the coming academic year.
The Autumn Term promises to be action-packed as usual, with opportunities for girls to shine in lessons, at extra-curricular clubs and on field trips. As well as new ground-breaking study visits which will be announced shortly, we have exciting annual staples such as Year 6's recent workshops at Warning Zone, Year 5's imminent two-day residential to Stratford upon Avon, and a huge array of fixtures and concerts.
This message comes to you with my very best wishes for the Autumn Term.
Miss Abbott
A huge welcome back to everyone! For me, it's certainly been a sporting summer break to remember and I hope that many of you were equally enthralled by the Lionesses' victory in July's Euros - it seems such a long time ago now! At one point, England seemed down and out, 0-2 down in the quarter-final against Sweden with ten minutes to go, only to fight back and ultimately win on one of the most nerve-wracking penalty shootouts ever. This led to a semi-final against Italy, where nerves were tested again; 0-1 down and five minutes into stoppage time before an equaliser which led to extra time and ultimately a 2-1 victory.
Demonstrating RESILIENCE, the team had battled their way to the final where Spain awaited them and where I was fortunate enough to be behind the goal to have a close up of the action. With added POSITIVITY and self-belief (qualities that we will be working on this year in PE lessons), England triumphed.
This month will also see the Red Roses in action, as the England women’s national rugby union team face Scotland this coming Sunday for a place in the semi-final. The final at Twickenham on 27 September is already an 82,000 sell out. Will you be watching?
We have a packed term of activities coming up, starting with Sports Top Tuesday, team relay challenges, House pentathlons, cross country, Forest Fun Runs, reindeer runs and sports hall athletics, on top of fixtures against local schools. Years 5-6 have started swimming lessons for this term, and we welcome Mr Scarborough from Senior School PE as one of our poolside instructors.
Years 3 -4 swim in the Spring Term
Nursery to Year 2 swim in the Summer Term
In Years 1-2, Mr Ashdown has already started his lessons which are hives of activity and enjoyment, and help set the girls on a path to enjoying a healthy and active lifestyle.
I thank our families for supporting the work that we do here in Physical Education, and I wish you all an active and fun-filled year!
SPORTS TOP TUESDAY 2025
On Tuesday 23 September, girls are invited to come to school wearing a sports top of their choice instead of their usual shirt and jumper - perhaps the shirt of a favourite football, ice hockey or rugby team, or maybe a top associated with a team or club that they represent outside of school. Our aim is to celebrate the diverse range of sports and activities that we enjoy at NGHS and during our leisure time, and to generate lively discussion about our choices.
Girls may of course wear their NGHS PE performance polo shirt or House t shirt if they don’t own a sports top. I look forward to hearing Mrs Astill and Mr Elkington ‘chatting’ about the merits of Forest 🏆 versus Leicester 🤡, and all staff will be on hand to offer moral support and encouragement to Mr Rolfe in his Notts County shirt . All strips will however be outshone by the heavenly glow from my mighty Aston Villa shirt! 😀

Purposeful study visits and field trips that combine exciting locations with memorable learning are a cornerstone of a creative curriculum - and our annual exploration of Shakespeare's Stratford upon Avon is just around the corner!
In three weeks' time, Year 5 will be off to learn about everyday life in Tudor England at the home of the Bard's grandmother, Mary Arden, which is now owned by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. With exclusive use of the whole premises, the girls will participate in a full-day workshop based on A Midsummer Night's Dream and hands-on activities to learn about 16th century construction techniques, food production, herbal remedies and recreation. There will also be a walking tour of Stratford, with a visit to the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
As well as the pastoral opportunity that one night away from home with friends offers, this will allow girls from 5JC and 5MC to work collaboratively, extend their learning beyond the classroom, and visualise the settings and scenarios in their current English texts, Rogues' Gold and Diver's Daughter.

Our ongoing green initiative for girls' birthdays
Bringing in sweets and cakes for birthday treats is becoming more difficult with food intolerances, allergies and our healthy eating agenda.
Please consider donating a potted house plant to the school instead. These indoor plants will be labelled with birthday girls' names and cared for by their classes, whilst also making their classroom more environmentally friendly places.
*** Alternatively, you can donate spring flowering bulbs (e.g. daffodils, allium) which can be planted during your daughter's Outdoor Learning or Science lessons, and which will last into the future. ***
Mr Rolfe
It has been wonderful to hear the sound of girls' voices resonating around the Junior School this week - MUSIC IS BACK!
At the start of each term, we remind parents that alongside our music clubs we also offer one-to-one music tuition from our team of in-house experts. The NGHS Music Department offers a space where pupils are encouraged to explore, perform and develop their talents, and where girls who take up an instrument or vocal training enjoy opportunities to boost their confidence and affirm their personal identity through music.
The routine and pleasure of musical study has also been consistently linked to academic progress and wellbeing; it encourages concentration, self-discipline, emotional intelligence and resilience - skills that last well beyond school.
Most instrumental and vocal lessons start on Monday 9th September, however applications are welcome at any point during the school year (subject to availability). Find out more by clicking on the links below, or email m.rolfe@not.gdst.net if you would like to to discuss the musical opportunities available.

In Year 5, our girls have had a fabulous start to science lessons, studying the properties of materials and how they can be changed between the states of solid, liquid and gas. This week, they learnt how to make ice-cream with flavoured milk, ice cubes and salt - YES, SALT - and without using a freezer!
Mrs Wood and Mr Elkington
As part of our progressive and practical approach to PSHE and Citizenship, girls from 6B and 6W spent Wednesday at Warning Zone, a Leicester-based charity dedicated to teaching life-skills and safeguarding children.
This study visit was all about understanding and assessing risks (e.g. crossing roads, what to do in the event of fire, the dangers of open water and ice), peer pressure (e.g. alcohol), anti-social behaviour, and consequences - with special attention paid to the dangers of cyber-bullying, online grooming and sharing information publicly online.
Well done, Year 6 - you were excellent ambassadors for our school and you engaged with the activities and challenges set with curiosity and maturity. 👍
"Ignore friends who dare you to trespass on building sites - anyone who genuinely cares about your safety would never do that" (Ellaria and Charlotte)
"Never jump into unfamiliar water - and stay away from the edge!" (Juliet)
"Don't trust strangers online - they might be lying about their age and gender" (Pippa)

Thank you to all of the parents, pupils, staff and alumnae who supported or completed our NGHS150 relay across Nottinghamshire. This HER FUTURE, YOUR GIFT fundraiser was a resounding success thanks to the enthusiasm, commitment and RESILIENCE of everyone involved. In total, we covered 125km in 29 hours with students and staff walking through the night and from the very early hours of the morning.
There is still time to show your appreciation for our walkers' sterling efforts, mark NGHS history and support our Bursary Fund by donating here:

Above and below - examples of multipacks which do not have ingredients stated on individual packets.
An important reminder from Mrs Fowler
If you intend to send in treats for your daughter’s class on her birthday or any other occasion, these must be COMPLETELY NUT FREE and individually wrapped with all ingredients and allergens printed on each wrapper. Treats will be sent home with pupils, for parents or guardians to decide whether they can be consumed. They must not be eaten at school.
Due to various allergies - whether known or unknown - we are unable to distribute any treats that fall short of these rules. This includes items contained within multipacks which may display ingredients on the main packet, but where this important information is not printed on individual items.
