This week saw no fewer than four top quality out-of-school experiences for Year 5 in North Yorkshire - a history study visit to Eden Camp, a geography field trip to the coast around Robin Hood's Bay, an English curriculum walking tour of Whitby, and a water safety workshop with the RNLI.
Eden Camp is a modern history museum, housed in a former prisoner of war camp. Here, the girls consolidated last term’s WW2 topic with a recap of the roles of women on the home front, and the experiences of families affected by bombing, rationing and evacuation.
As well as developing their OS map reading skills, the girls’ current geography topic involves a study of how bays and headlands erode over time, and the nature of coastal defences. The shore along the Cleveland Way coastal path provided examples of land slips and coastal defences recently studied in class, and an opportunity to navigate a walking route using map reading skills learnt in school - with the added bonuses of rock pooling and fossil hunting!
The final morning, in Whitby, had equally important learning angles. Firstly, the girls' current English texts - an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Room 13 by Robert Swindells and Evie's War by Holly Webb - are set in the town, and seeing the settings described in the books will support their upcoming reading and writing tasks. Secondly, the girls have been learning about the work of the RNLI, so this was a chance for them to visit a working lifeboat station and see artefacts from the wreck of the SS Rohilla, the sinking of which features in Evie's War.

Our annual NGHS Juniors Sports Day will take place next Friday, 26 June, at Harvey Hadden stadium. Pupils in Years 1 to 6 will be running, jumping and throwing to score as many points as possible for their Houses ...
Will LUXTON retain its title?
Who will break school records?
Who's hoping to stand on the podium in 1st, 2nd or 3rd position?
We look forward to seeing every girl do her best! 😀
Another week of lovely weather has seen the Years 5-6 cricket teams competing in the City finals. For Year 5, this is always a big ask because they are in a so-called 'mixed' competition with many teams from co-ed schools fielding 100% male teams. That said, girls can play just as well as boys, and the challenge of coming up against faster bowlers and determined fielders is one that we relish for improving our overall play. It was a tough day for them, losing four matches and winning one, and finishing in overall fourth position.
The Year 6 competion is female-only, and our girls acquitted themselves well; they won two and lost two, finishing in third place.
As we approach the summer holiday, just a reminder that if you would like to have your daughter's ears pierced, please try to ensure that this is done at the start of the holiday to allow sufficient time for healing - and so that earrings can be removed and not worn to school on PE and swimming days.
This applies especially to girls in the current Years 4 and 5, as their swimming lessons will start in early September.

Last Friday, thirty girls from Years 5 and 6 signed up for an exciting educational sleepover Space Camp, centred around the fascinating topic of The Evolution of the planet Jupiter. The evening included pizzas cooked in our outdoor oven, telescope observations of sunspots, and discussions with our resident astronomer, Mr Barrett.
The girls learnt about giant gas planets that orbit remarkably close to their G & F class stars, at a distance ~ 0.1 AU - 0.3 AU (Astronomical Units) and then - with guidance from Mr Rolfe - they enjoyed composing music inspired by NASA's Artemis missions. They also exercised their creativity with Mr Brown, entering a design competition to invent and illustrate their own 'Hot Jupiters', with prizes awarded for the most imaginative and scientifically-informed ideas.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this year's Space Camp such a huge success!
Mr Rolfe
On Monday, we hosted our annual NGHS Voice Festival, a whole day dedicated to the talent and hard work of our many vocalists. After morning rehearsals, the girls experienced a fabulous afternoon masterclass led by specialist Suzzie Vango from The National Children’s Choir and University of Birmingham. Suzzie engaged them with great tips and advice on performance - reinforcing what they have already learnt under the tutilage of Mrs Keys - and gave them extra encouragement for the superb early evening concert that followed.
Although voice lessons are currently full at NGHS, Mrs Keys will have spaces in September, and new pupils from Year 3 upwards are now invited to apply:

As everyone prepares to meet their new teachers and classes next Wednesday, our Year 6 students have been completing the final stages of their transition programme in readiness for Senior School in September. In an all-through school, the move to Year 7 can be made so much less stressful and difficult - and at NGHS, we pride ourselves on the extra preparation that we provide for girls in their final year of Junior School.
Over the last half-term, Year 6 have attended lessons with their new teachers in Senior School classrooms, and they have especially enjoyed taster sessions in Food Technology, maths and Resistant Materials - Mrs Fowler was really impressed with the pizzas and LED lamps that the girls made from scratch in their Design Technology workshops!

On Thursday, Year 1 enjoyed a day of exciting indoor and outdoor activities, all linked to their current Robin Hood topic.
This included den building to create hideouts, identifying tree species in The Arboretum, making wanted posters for the Sheriff of Nottingham, soft archery with bean bag targets, a hunt for King John's gold, and a silent stalk through 'Sherwood Forest'!
We recently had the pleasure of hosting Sasha Gibbs, nutritionist for the school's catering contractor Holroyd Howe. Sasha and girls from Years 1 to 6 enjoyed discussing and tasting foods that help us GO, GROW and GLOW! She was able to gather some great feedback from those who shared their views about our new lunch offering, and she was keen to ensure that our whole school community understands our caterer's aims and its focus on fresh rather than ultra processed products:
'We are committed to providing pupils with nutritious, balanced meals using high-quality ingredients. Wherever possible, our sauces and recipes are all prepared in house by our chefs, allowing us to control the ingredients used and reduce the reliance on ultra processed products. Whilst some manufactured ingredients are occasionally necessary, our menus are designed to focus on fresh ingredients, variety, and flavoursome meals that meet our standards. Manufactured ingredients such as pea protein are specifically selected with short ingredient lists, minimal additives and strong nutritional profiles to meet pupils' dietary requirements whilst also supporting preferences and sensory or dietary needs.'
Mrs Fowler
Thank you to those Year 4 parents who were able to join their daughters in Senior School experience lessons last week, one of which coincided with the visit of nutritionist Sasha Gibbs from Holroyd Howe. In Food Technology, Sasha delivered an interesting overview of food groups and everyone enjoyed making some very tasty protein balls:
Meanwhile in the Senior School art studio, girls and parents collaborated in layering paper to create petals, then adding unusual images such as eyeballs to create unique surreals flower on stems. In a science laboratory, they explored the concept of density through a series of demonstrations and mini-activities, and in the Classics Department the focus was on exploring the ancient world through stories and artefact coins.
