Year 2 at Twycross Zoo 🐒

Mrs Crabtree

Last Thursday, Year 2 enjoyed a study visit to Twycross Zoo, where they experienced many examples of changeable British weather!

In an interactive workshop, they learnt about African animals, supporting their current humanities topic about Africa and their science unit on habitats.  The girls enjoyed looking at a wide range of species, and exploring their diets and lifestyles.

Well done for demonstrating such RESILENCE and POSITIVITY in the face of such inclement weather, 2C - and thank you to our quick-thinking staff team for using their CREATIVITY in seeking shelter in the Gibbon Forest.  A great (and soggy) day out was had by all!  ☔

Year 5 in Stratford upon Avon  🎭

What a wonderful field trip and study visit!  This week, Year 5 spent two busy days in and around Stratford upon Avon as guests of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.  Thursday’s itinerary included an action-packed drama workshop centred around A Midsummer Night’s Dream, culminating in a confident performance of a potted version of the play which included lines from the original script.  Then came a visit to the Royal Shakespeare Company, taking in panoramic views from the theatre tower and an exhibition of costumes and props from the RSC's archive.  Finally, the girls enjoyed a walking tour of the town, taking in The Bard of Avon’s childhood home and school - as well as opportunities to compare authentic Tudor buildings with later replicas.

Friday involved an even deeper dive into the primary historical evidence that can inform our learning about past lives.  Hands-on workshops at Mary Arden’s Farm - the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother - involved making wattle and daub screens, exploring the interior of a Tudor home, meeting farm animals common in the Elizabethan era, making lavender bags, observing butter making, painting a wall hanging, and taking part in a group dance.

Congratulations, 5C - you worked incredibly hard over two days, and did yourselves proud!

Get your hearts racing!  ❤️

Miss Abbott

This week, girls from Years 3 to 5 will bring home their 30-day cardio challenge sheets; this project supports the work which they are doing in PE lessons.  Every girl should start the challenge on Monday 7th October, with support and encouragement from families who can even join them in their endeavour!

The main objective of this initiative is to increase awareness of daily exercise, with the challenge running for two weeks before Half Term and two weeks after, after which the girls should return their sheets to school and the best ones will be displayed on the PE noticeboard.  Good luck, everyone!

A message from the Junior School Library  📚

Throughout October, we are proud to showcase a wide selection of books respecting Black History and celebrating Black Excellence.  Titles highlighted this year include non-fiction with themes of civil rights and diversity, some joyous picture books, and a wide range of inspirational biographies from Harriet Tubman to Maya Angelou and Beyoncé.  Come along to explore, girls!

Keep our school tidy!  🚮

Mrs Crabtree

Thank you to Year 2 for giving the school a quick spruce-up during this week's Outdoor Learning lesson.  As well as taking direct action to improve the local environment, this was also a good chance for the girls to see other parts of our campus.

Positively pentathlon!  👟

Miss Abbott

Our plucky Y5-Y6 pentathlon team took part in their City heat at Harvey Hadden Sports Village on Tuesday and managed to run, jump and throw their way into third place in the competition!  This admirable achievement included participating in the 'boys event' too, thus putting us on level playing field for points with competing co-ed schools.  We now wait to see if our score is sufficient for us qualify for the main final later this term.

Back at school, we also had our Y5-Y6 inter-house pentathlon this week; this will give us a base line for the girls’ fitness, which they will then aim to improve at our second pentathlon in the Summer Term.  Alas, technology was not on our side for this event and the computer said, "No" - so the results will be announced next week!  🤞🏻

BE IN IT TO WIN IT!  🥂

The 2024 Glitter Ball Raffle will raise funds for the NGHS Bursary Programme, celebrating our 150th anniversary in September 2025.  If you’re unable to attend the Glitter Ball itself, purchasing raffle tickets is a fantastic way to still make a big difference.

Every ticket supports our aim to provide bright girls in Nottingham with transformational opportunities by accessing an NGHS education.

Prizes include a flat screen TV,  9th Gen iPad (64GB), Drayton Manor family tickets, a Ninja wood fire barbecue, Ray-Ban sunglasses, restaurant meals, and many more!  Your support - even from afar - helps to change lives.

Parents can purchase tickets via a ParentPay account, and other supporters may buy tickets too via our external ParentPay SHOP (donations need to be a multiple of £5, select 'other' from the dropdown menu, input 'raffle ticket' as the reason for payment, and insert name in the 'reference' box).

Raffle tickets will be entered into the draw which will take place at the Glitter Ball on the evening of Saturday 12 October, and winners will be notified by the school.  Thank you for your support!

A reminder from Outdoor Learning

Miss Whitehead

Our hugely popular collection of wellies-for-loan is somewhat depleted following the retirement of some of our more leaky boots, and we are running very low on larger sizes.

If your son or daughter has recently grown out of a pair, please would you consider donating them to our thrifty Outdoor Learning Department?  We would be especially grateful for adult sizes 3 to 7 - THANK YOU!  🙏
