13 December 2024

Above - the Lace Market Carol Service - not to be confused with the NGHS Carol Service on Friday 20 December - is an annual community event, supported by city centre businesses.  All are welcome.

Ding dong merrily on high! 🎵

Mr Rolfe

On Tuesday night, we hosted a truly memorable Christmas concert that showcased the musical talents and passions of our girls, with each and every performance demonstrating RESILENCE and EXCELLENCE in a truly diverse range of acts.  It was lovely to see so many family supporters beaming with pride, helping us to make Winter Lights 2024 a night to remember, and showing their appreciation by donating generously to our good causes - thank you.

Thanks also go to the staff - front of house, onstage and behind the scenes - who supported this event and ensured everything ran smoothly.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue our festive season journey as we reach out into the wider community.  This coming Saturday, our students will be taking part in a charity busking event in Nottingham's Victoria Centre, followed by a visit to a local care home in Radford on Tuesday for our Year 5 and Year 6 buskers.  Additionally, the Vocalise choir will be performing at the Lace Market Carol Service at St Mary’s Church on Thursday lunchtime.  ‘Tis the season!

FOCUS ON ...

MATHS IN MOTION 🏎️

Miss Baker

By invitation only - based on mathematical assessment data, ability and recommendations from class teachers - girls join Maths in Motion from Year 5.  Due to the complexity of this ongoing project, they then commit themselves to the club for two years, with sessions lasting one hour and currently taking place after school on Wednesdays.  Places are limited, although very occasionally new girls can join part-way through an academic year.

Maths in Motion uses software designed to raise attainment and engagement in mathematics.  Simulating the set up of a Formula 1 racing car, pupils encounter a variety of mathematical problem-solving activities to prepare their vehicle for a race.  'Race days' are very exciting as teams compete around circuits with virtual engines overheating, cars spinning off the track, and even running out of fuel due to miscalculations!  Teamwork is vital, with girls of different ages collaborating to win.

REMINDER - arrangements for the last day of term

All parents are invited to our annual Carol Service at St Mary's Church in the Lace Market on the last day of term, on Friday 20 December - this event starts at 10:30 and should finish at 11:30.

This is a special opportunity for girls from Reception to Year 6 - of all faiths and none - to come together at a memorable occasion to mark the end of term and the beginning of the festive season.  Families who have not yet accepted to our invitation to attend may still do so here: Please click here to confirm your attendance

Timings for the final day of term are as follows:

The holly and the ivy

Miss Whitehead and Miss Wall

Well done to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to tackle Christmas wreath making in Upnah Wood this week.  The weather wasn't encouraging, but we saw some very artistic results and our Estates Department will be delighted that there is now a little less ivy clinging to our trees!  😃

Christmas jumper day

Mrs Collis and the catering team

Happy Christmas, girls!  We enjoyed the spectacle all of your lovely festive jumpers on Friday this week, and we also really loved seeing you all tucking into your celebration lunches.

Just like you in your lessons, we've all worked really hard this term in our kitchen and dining hall, and we're now looking forward to a fortnight off and lighter days in the spring.  But before that, we're really excited about coming to St Mary's Church with you on Friday, to finish off the term with some lovely carols.

Busking for a great cause!

If you happen to be in Nottingham this Saturday, please pop along to support our intrepid NGHS buskers who will be singing and strumming their hearts out to raise funds for PASIC - the Parents' Association for Seriously Ill Children:

Miss Abbott

This week saw our friends from Haydn Primary School returning for their second coaching session with our most confident  Year 5 netballers.  It was lovely to see our girls collaborating to share their expertise, and the feedback from the visiting teacher (an NGHS alumna  taught back-in-the-day by me!) was excellent.

Friday's inter-house Christmas Cardio Reindeer Run completed this term's Y3-Y6 cardiovascular fitness theme - congratulations to BOLTON who completed the most laps in the permitted time.  This required RESILIENCE and INITIATIVE good old-fashioned teamwork - well done, girls!

I look forward to welcoming everyone back to PE and Sport in the new year, and to resuming the Year 3 and Year 4 swimming programme - starting on the first Friday of term.

⛷️  SKI FITNESS TRAINING  ⛷️

Girls attending the GDST ski trip in March are reminded that weekly fitness sessions commence on Friday 10 January at 8am prompt.  Please come straight to the Fitness Suite, via the Junior Playground.

 👖 Non-uniform day 👗

Wednesday 18 December

On Wednesday, girls may come to school wearing their own choice of clothing or a party outfit - with TRAINERS.  Please note that jewellery is not permitted, and PE kit should be in school all week as usual.

Oh, Christmas tree!  🎄

Mrs Fowler

The annual tradition of Year 6 girls donating a decoration to the NGHS Juniors Christmas tree continues!  This is a lovely way for girls to mark their final festive season with us, and many of them enjoy returning in subsequent years to see their baubles still cherished and on display.  Thank you for your donations, 6B and 6C - the tree looks magnificent  💙

Big projects in little hands   👩🏾‍🍳

Miss Duce

Our youngest pupils have had great fun recently, making gingerbread men as part of their current traditional tales topic.  They used mathematical skills to weigh and measure ingredients, observing the changes as the ingredients were combined.  Rolling out the dough required a little elbow grease, and then the girls cut out their shapes before filling the classroom with the delicious smell of the gingerbread men baking in the oven.   Fortunately, none of them ran away!

As part of our weekly specialist sessions, we are also currently busy creating rabbits with Mr Fenn in our woodwork class.  So far, we have coloured the legs and sanded the wood - and we have even had the opportunity help with drilling small holes for the legs.  We have also learnt about the importance of clamping our wood to the table, and of wearing goggles to protect our eyes  🥽
