Year 4 explore life and death in ancient Egypt 🔎

This week, girls from Year 4 visited the Ashmolean Museum and Pitt Rivers Collection in Oxford to see ancient Egyptian artefacts up close.  Mummified cats, birds of prey and crocodiles seemed to catch everyone’s attention, as did the bandaged contents of cedar coffins which had been painted thousands of years ago - just as we’ve seen in books in class.  Our girls were especially adept at recognising real life cartouches, depicting the gods and symbols studied at school.  They were also rather taken with the dozens of funerary objects on display (e.g. models of boats and farming scenes), which showed them how the tombs of the nobility can also reveal much about ancient Egyptian daily life beyond palace walls.  Well done for conducting yourselves so beautifully and asking such probing questions in both museums, girls!

Year 6 in Narnia  🦁

Mrs Braud and Mr Cox

On Wednesday, thirty girls from Year 6 spent a morning on the streets of Oxford and at The Story Museum, exploring some of the real-life settings and scenarios that inspired C.S. Lewis when writing his Chronicles of Narnia series.  This visit supported their Autumn Term study of  The Magician's Nephew (the prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe).

An afternoon tour of the museum's immersive galleries and a workshop centred around fantasy portals and 'other worlds' has provided inspiration for future writing projects - this was an enjoyable and purposeful day of discovery for all!

Right:  You're never too old for story time and the dressing up box! 😀

Aslan can be found in this door carving!

Narnia's gas lantern - in the centre of Oxford.

C.S. Lewis was a regular worshipper here.

Cardio Challenge Reminder!  ❤️

Miss Abbott

Last week, girls from Years 3 to 5 took home their 30-day cardio challenge sheets; this project supports the work which they are doing in PE lessons.  Everyone should have started the challenge on Monday 7th October, with support and encouragement from families - who can even join them in their endeavour!

The main objective of this initiative is to increase awareness of daily exercise, with the challenge running for two weeks before Half Term and the two weeks of Half Term itself, after which the girls should return their sheets to school and the best ones will be displayed on the PE noticeboard.

I hope you are all enjoying the fitness challenge after the first week, and that you will demonstrate RESILIENCE by keeping it going for the next three!  💪🏻

A message from the Junior School Library  📚

Throughout October, we are proud to showcase a wide selection of books respecting Black History and celebrating Black Excellence.  Titles highlighted this year include non-fiction with themes of civil rights and diversity, some joyous picture books, and a wide range of inspirational biographies from Harriet Tubman to Maya Angelou and Beyoncé.  Come along to explore, girls!

**  BREAKING NEWS  **

Our new Year 6 Library assistants are about to be appointed, and we can't wait for them to start!

Come fly with me!  ✈️

Mrs Garton

Over the last couple of weeks, STEM Club have been experimenting with paper aeroplanes.  The girls have investigated whether the size or type of paper makes a difference, and they have also explored different folding methods - the 'arrow' and the 'classic dart', as recommended by those clever people at the Royal Air Force Museum.

GDST Maths Conference  🧠

Mr Elkington

Six intrepid mathematicians represented NGHS Juniors at the 2024 GDST Junior Maths Conference, hosted by Oxford University's Mathematical Institute.  This year's programme included a Mathematical Magic interactive workshop and activities led by Sixth Form students from our sister GDST school, Oxford High.

Well done to Amelie, Olivia, Ruqaya, Dina, Maia and Mimi who were selected for this challenge and who were fabulous ambassadors for Year 6.  👍🏼

A TASTE OF VICTORY!  🏑

Miss Abbott

The NGHS Juniors Year 5-6 team played their first hockey match of the season this week against our sister school from Northampton.  What a stellar performance, with Amelie scoring four goals as part of a sweeping 7-0 victory!   Well done also to Lacey who was named player of the match.

Girls should ensure that they check the PE noticeboard for details of three new hockey fixtures coming up after Half Term.   👍

Nursery rhymes with bells and whistles!

Mrs Crawshaw

Year 5 have been working collaboratively to develop their use of adventurous vocabulary, and in doing so they have created their own versions of nursery rhymes that our readers might recognise.
