Sports Top Tuesday

Miss Abbott

Wow, girls - and staff too!  Your response to our first ever Sports Top Tuesday was amazing - a fabulous array of international football team shirts was showcased, along with a multitude of tops from local running clubs, swimming clubs, gym clubs and cricket clubs.  This was a wonderful celebration of supporting and taking part in sport, and of what it means to many of us to be able to do this.  Well done, and thank you everyone who participated - it was especially good to hear so many of you chatting about your choices, and to witness friendly rivalry and firm opinions being aired!

Mixing things up in Year 5  👩‍🔬

Mrs Crawshaw

Following hot on the heels of making ice cream in the previous week's science lesson, Year 5 have now tested a range of everyday materials to investigate what happens to them when they are mixed with water.  Scientific terms such as dissolve, solution, soluble and insoluble were discussed whilst experimenting, as well as exploring the principle of fair testing.  Well done for collaborating so well, girls, and for recording your results so precisely.

Careful examination reveals scientific facts  🔎 🍂

Year 6's current science topic involves the identification and classification of living organisms.  Having worked through the differing characteristics of birds that place them in categories such as waterfowl, birds of prey and auks, the girls are now turning their attention to plants.

With the theory covered in class, the practical challenge for this unit of study involves a survey of the garden and school greenhouse outside Milford Building, where an interesting array of vascular and non-vascular plants can be found.  Here, careful examination of shrubs, perennials and trees reveals how each specimen grows and reproduces.  Well done for being so observant, Year 6!

Give it some welly (please)!

Miss Whitehead

Our hugely popular collection of wellies-for-loan is somewhat depleted following the retirement of some of our more leaky boots, and we are running very low on larger sizes.

If your son or daughter has recently grown out of a pair, please would you consider donating them to our thrifty Outdoor Learning Department?  We would be especially grateful for adult sizes 3 to 7 - THANK YOU!  🙏

Something fishy is going on in Nursery ...  🐠

Miss Duce

On Tuesday, our youngest pupils visited Trowell Garden Centre to choose new additions for their class aquarium; this was a great opportunity to see lots of different fish, showcasing a range of colours, size and patterns.  The girls enjoyed feeding the koi carp and were then thrilled to come back to school with six new classmates - all of them in the species Fireline Danio and yet to be named!   🐟

In your purses and on your letters all these years ...

Nottingham Women’s History Group was formed in 2010 with the aim of celebrating, promoting and researching the contributions of women to our local and national story.

The group has recently published Nottingham Herstory, a celebration of fifty remarkable women who were born, lived or achieved in our city - four of whom were NGHS alumnae.

One such example is Mary Gillick OBE (née Tutin, 1881-1965) who was educated first at Nottingham Girls' High School and then at Nottingham School of Art, where she took up sculpture.  She subsequently studied at London's Royal College of Art and set up a studio in Chelsea.  From the 1920s, Mary Gillick exhibited at the Royal Academy and purchasers of her work included Charles Boot of Henry Boot Construction for this home at Thornbridge Hall in Derbyshire.

It was in 1952 on the accession of Queen Elizabeth II that Mary - by now aged 71 - beat off competition to secure a commission to work with the Royal Mint on designs for new coinage, not just for Britain but also for Realms and Colonies such as Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)  and Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).  For her efforts, she was appointed OBE in the 1953 Coronation Honours and - were she still alive today - she would certainly be able to boast that her instantly recognisable and iconic silhouette of The Queen had been seen, held and used by billions of people worldwide.

A world of trees on our doorstep  🌳

Nottingham's Arboretum was the city's first ever public park, which opened in 1852.  It was designed as a botanical collection and a tranquil place to relax, and it now contains more than 800 trees belonging to 65 different species.

On Monday - as part of their geography topic - Year 6 used maps to locate and identify nearly thirty different tree species, having first plotted their origins on world maps in class.

As well as developing fieldwork and observational skills, this was also an opportunity for the girls to collaborate with Mrs Giacone and Ms Stoppard from the Senior School Geography Department - all part of our transition programme to Key Stage 3 that serves to build confidence for September.

Above and below:  Hockey Club is back - HOORAY!

SPORTS REPORT 🏃🏿‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♀️

Miss Abbott

This week has seen us hitting the ground running (quite literally!) with a week’s worth of clubs under our belts and the start of our extra-curricular programme.

Our first hockey match of the season against Northampton was unfortunately cancelled due to stormy weather, however it has been rescheduled for Monday 7 October with the same team and timings.

Girls from Years 5 and 6 did however represent NGHS Juniors in the annual City Team Relay Challenge this week, running as many laps of the Harvey Hadden 400m track as possible in 30 minutes.  This year, our A team managed 20 laps and our B team 17 laps.  What a result - the A team broke our previous school record and deservedly won overall, and were crowned City Champions!  Our B team also fared well, tying for 3rd position and losing out on countback.  Overall, an excellent result for both teams:

A

Elsie Plant,  Magdalena Resch, Anveesha Mahida, Junli Chen, Maya Mensah, Lacey Brown

B

Coco Strauss, Emily Bloch, Isobel Dewar, Liliana Burt-Cox, Ida Corbett, Maia Knopp

Finally, we have juust held our cross country timing trials - in typically wet and miserable cross country conditions, I'm afraid - providing girls with an opportunity to experience running a typical cross country distance of 1500m.  We certainly witnessed maximum effort, and we recorded some excellent times!  Please do make a note of this year’s cross country dates:

Y5/6 City League at Berry Hill, Mansfield

(Minimum 4 runners each date, maximum 8)

Saturday 5 October

Saturday 16 November

Saturday 30 November

Y5/6 City Championships, Wollaton Park

Wednesday 13 November

Y3/4 and Y5/6 Highfields School Invitational

Thursday 14 November

Parents, please continue to encourage your daughters to participate in extra-curricular sports clubs to experience new activities, improve their fitness, widen their friendship groups and experience the thrill and value of team and individual sports!   😀
