NGHS Juniors Harvest Appeal 2024  🍫 🥫

Mr Cox

Having supported the sterling work of Muslim Hands and Guru Nanak's Mission for our last two harvest festivals, this Friday's assembly focused our attention on the mission of The Friary in West Bridgford - a Christian-led organisation which helps local people who are either homeless or living in supported accommodation.  Pupils from all year groups demonstrated great empathy for those who have less in life, and showed their appreciation for volunteers and workers who do such meaningful work in our city.

Please take time to watch this short but heartfelt video message from our girls, and consider our 2024 harvest  appeal when you do your grocery shopping over the next ten days.  Donations should be given to form teachers - thank you in advance for your generosity.

**  This year's appeal runs from Monday until Friday 27 September  **

Technology upgrade begins  💻

Chromebook rollout in Key Stage 2

NGHS Juniors continues to be at the forefront of classroom technology, having been an early adopter of iPads in lessons and quickly earning Apple Distinguished School accreditation.

Our first Google Chromebooks arrived this week and are already proving to be a hit with girls in Year 6.  This marks an important development and investment in our IT provision, equipping older pupils for Senior School and widening their expertise with different devices and operating systems.

Managing  electronic devices on such a vast scale - and with such a wide range of users - is no mean feat.  We are very lucky to have a fabulous support team on hand every day to help teachers and students alike, and to benefit from the investment afforded by being part of the GDST family of schools.

(Rare or endangered tops are welcome)

Don't forget Sports Top Tuesday! 👕

**  This coming Tuesday, 24 September  **

Girls are invited to come to school wearing a sports top of their choice instead of their usual shirt and jumper - perhaps the shirt of a favourite football, ice hockey or rugby team, or maybe a top associated with a team or club that you represent outside of school.  Our aim will be to celebrate the diverse range of sports and activities that we enjoy at NGHS and during our leisure time.

If you do not have a sports top, feel free to wear your usual PE performance polo shirt or house colour t-shirt instead.  😀

🍾 Partying for a good cause! 🥂

The NGHS Glitter Ball is set to be a wonderful evening of glitz and dancing, and a perfect chance to connect with other families in our school community.  Tickets will be available until Monday 23rd September, and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible. Don’t miss out on this special night – secure your tickets now and join us for what promises to be a fantastic event!

With live music from The Money, a drinks reception and a three-course meal, we have some fantastic money-can’t-buy auction prizes for on the night, including Cook-a-Long with BBC Chef Mark Lloyd, a Fantasy Island weekend lodge break with hot tub and six entry passes, and a Weavers Wine tasting event hosted in your own home - with many more to be shared on the night.

We are very happy to arrange tables for those who wish to purchase just one or two tickets; our ambition is that every year group is represented at this whole school event.

An evening of fun and entertainment, and all for a great cause - the Nottingham Girls’ High School Bursary Fund.

Saturday 12 October 2024  7pm - 1am

at the East Midlands Conference Centre

Year 5 break new ground with an old technique

Mrs Crawshaw

Year 5 used one of the world's oldest photographic printing processes in their art lessons this week - cyanotype printing, which involves using paper coated with chemicals sensitive to ultraviolet light and sunlight.  In creating some beautiful representations of flowers and leaves, the girls also learnt how a chemical reaction can form a new material.  Art and science, all  in one lesson - well done, girls!  🎨 🧪

Can't come to the ball?

If you cannot attend this year's Glitter Ball, there's another way in which generous families can support the NGHS Bursary Fund - by helping us to stock some extravagant hampers as raffle prizes to be drawn on the night!  Please pass donations to your daughter's form teacher by Friday 27 September, and thank you to everyone who has given generously so far❤️

Year 1 study visit to Sudbury Hall  🪀

Mrs Garton

As part of their TOYS - Then and Now topic, girls from Year 1 enjoyed a visit to the National Trust's Children's Country House at Sudbury earlier this week.

This was an opportunity to explore the differences between toys from the past and present day by examining materials, colours and uses, and by discussing how play has evolved over the years.  Handling objects in a curator-led workshop was especially enjoyable, as was touring the toy galleries in the museum and the formal gardens outside.

A picnic lunch in the sunshine and discovering a magical playground in the woods were the icing on the cake!

Musical notes  🎵

Mr Rolfe

It's been wonderful hearing the Junior School so full of music again this week.  Our outstanding team of expert visiting teachers have been busy delivering lessons from Reception to Year 6; our clubs, orchestras and choirs have seen incredible sign-up rates and attendance, and our department is gearing up for another big year!

Instrumental lessons

These are available in all mainstream orchestral, band and rock and pop instruments to be found in school.

Orchestras, bands and clubs

For those wishing to go down the club pathway for musical enrichment, our Y1-Y2 and Y3-Y4 choirs and our Y5-Y6 Ukuladies group are free to attend.

Girls wishing to join the Year 5-6 choir should enquire with Mr Rolfe; this will involve a simple voice test.
