Miss Abbott
Last week saw a whole host of school records broken at our 2025 Sports Day for Years 1-6.
A special mention also goes to Maya M and Magdalena who also broke the previous Year 6 800m record - what a fast race!
Thank you again to everyone who has ensured that clothing, footwear and equipment are labelled. Unfortunately, we still have a number of items which are unnamed and unclaimed in the Rainbow Room lost property station - including jumpers, cardigans, PE mid-layers, caps, tracksuit bottoms and a number of water bottles.
Lost property will be CLEARED at 5pm on Wednesday 9 July, with any remaining unnamed items being disposed of or made available to purchase at a preloved uniform sale in the Autumn Term. ♻️
Mr Ashdown
Congratulations to Amelie, Anveesha, Tala, Liliana, Dina, Coco, Harriet and Mimi who represented NGHS at the County Girls’ Kwik Cricket Finals, hosted by Caythorpe Cricket Club this week. There, the top twelve teams from across the county came together to battle it out for the title of county champions.
Our team got off to a flying start in the group stages, recording victories against Holy Cross and Chetwynd, and beating Robert Miles off the last ball. They then progressed into the semi-finals, where they continued their excellent form with a comfortable win over Leen Mills.
In a hard-fought final, NGHS came up just short against Arno Vale, finishing as county runners-up - our best result EVER at this level of competition! This incredible achievement comes just weeks after the same team placed 4th at the GDST Cricket Tournament.
Well done for exhibiting such dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship, girls. Your commitment to training every Tuesday evening throughout the winter and summer has paid off, and you can be incredibly proud of your performance!
Mrs Bolgar, Head of Biology
Mrs Wilson-Wood, Head of Chemistry
As their transition programme to Senior School draws to its close, we recently welcomed pupils from Year 6 to the Biology and Chemistry Departments for this week's science lessons.
In biology, 6C learnt about what each part of a microscope does, and how to use one by studying a variety of slides and attempting to work out what they were looking at. There were opportunities to view a range of specimens including hair, fish scales, human cheek cells, plant cells and even mosquitoes and headlice! The girls really enjoyed seeing the detail provided under magnification and then took photos down the microscope – a difficult skill – and obtained some great images.
6B's chemistry lesson involved using the properties of chocolate to model the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Well done, girls - you used great observational skills and worked well in teams!
GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE!
Mrs Fowler
We have been truly impressed by the creativity and range of ideas that the girls have submitted for the NGHS 150 Junior Challenge, and we thank parents for their support with Milestone 1.
Class teachers have now reviewed all of the ideas and have spoken with pupils where necessary, if clarification was required. If you have not heard from your daughter’s teacher, please assume the ‘green light’ to get started on just one of her suggested projects.
Milestone 2 runs until the end of this term. During this period, girls will need to weigh up and consider which of their three suggestions will make the best challenge. Aspects to consider may include but are not limited to:
The time needed to complete the challenge
Resources required and the cost of these
The amount of support required (ideally girls should try to be as independent as possible and the challenge should be their work)
Milestone 3 runs for the duration of the summer holiday, with girls working to achieve what they have set out to do and collecting some evidence along the way. This could be a written diary, some photographs or video footage or even some audio clips capturing each stage of the challenge, for example but this list is not exhaustive. Click on the link (right) for top tips.
From September, girls will be writing about their challenges in school and may be asked to present their achievements to their class or in an assembly - so any evidence collected along the way will help with this.
Please feel free to send the occasional update or photos to l.sail@not.gdst.net over the summer – these may be added to our NGHS 150 Junior Challenge microsite or Instagram to help keep the inspiration flowing over the summer. We wish all of our girls the very best of luck with their wonderful challenges!
Mrs McDowell and Mr Rolfe
Playing to four full houses in the Squire Performing Arts Centre, Years 5 and 6 truly knocked the ball out of the park this week with their superb performances of the musical My Son Pinocchio.
Inspired by the 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the Italian author Carlo Collodi, this energetic production showcased the girls' passion for performance and their commitment to musical and dramatic excellence.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible - especially the technical and front of house teams at the SPACE, the Year 8-9 Music Scholars who managed backstage so well, and additional director Ellie Keys.
This was a fabulous collaboration between this year's 5C, 6B and 6C. My Son Pinocchio will be a tough act to follow!

As our Music Ambassadors come to the end of a year of innovation, inspiration and going the extra mile, they proudly present their third and final podcast for 2024-2025.
Having delved into teachers' musical tastes and celebrated World Book Day in the Autumn and Spring Terms, the girls' summer podcast sees the PE and Music Departments going head-to-head. Mr Rolfe and Miss Abbott - whose combined service to the school spans an impressive 57 years - discuss their passions for sport and music. Miss Abbott shares some hilarious musical tales from her school days, and Mr Rolfe speaks about his own sporting journey and his beloved Notts County.
The episode ends with a lively quiz created by Alice and Florence, where the adults are put to the test with music- and sports-related questions. Who will come out on top? Tune in to find out!
This podcast wraps up what has been a hugely successful year for the Music Ambassadors programme. The girls have truly excelled, demonstrating leadership, creativity and commitment. We wish them all luck as they move up to Senior School, and we are already looking forward to seeing what next year’s Ambassadors will dream up!

Our NGHS librarians share their summer holiday reading recommendations ...
Empathy Lab is an organisation that promotes empathy through the transformative power of reading. To celebrate Empathy Day on 12 June, we have several of their recommendations currently on display in the Rainbow Room. These include amusing fiction titles such as Ramzee’s The Cheat Book and Sarah Bowie’s Nina Peanut is Amazing, adventure stories from Polly Ho-Yen and Isabella Harcourt, and engaging non-fiction titles aimed at putting readers in others’ shoes and helping them to articulate and share feelings. Overall, this is a great range of books, as enjoyable as they’re important. Everybody is welcome to browse.
We also have a wide selection of general arts and crafts activity books in the library, so there’s plenty to keep you busy throughout those lovely long summer days!

As a fan of all things spooky, I’ve been very interested in the recent popularity of Jennifer Killick’s Dread Wood comedy-horror series with our older Junior School readers. The stories follow a group of school friends forced to battle a range of ghoulish monsters - including giant spiders and vampire birds - and the fourth book, Deadly Deep, follows the gang on a summer term school trip to the coast of France, where strange creatures lurk beneath the waves.
More scary reads have also just arrived in the library; The Doll Twin by Janine Beacham combines a creepy doppelganger with a historical setting and thrilling twists, and Yvonne Banham’s The Dark and Dangerous Gifts of Delores Mackenzie is the first book in a chilling new fantasy series. Plenty for you to get your teeth (or fangs) into, girls!
At Book Club, we have recently explored titles shortlisted for the InspiREAD Award 2025 – an award organised by Nottinghamshire's Education Library Service, whose librarians have picked their favourite titles published in the last year. It has then been down to pupils, families, teachers to vote for the books they enjoyed the most!
The four shortlisted books are:
Reek by Alastair Chisholm - a gripping dystopian thriller where climate catastrophe leaves humans fighting for oxygen. This title is published by Barrington Stoke and is dyslexia friendly.
The Letter with the Golden Stamp by Onjali Q. Raúf delves into the fears and hopes of young carers everywhere, and the invisible sources of kindness knocking on all of our doors.
The Clockwork Conspiracy by Sam Sedgman is a locked-room mystery packed with rooftop chases, hidden codes and mind-bending science.
Shadowhall Academy: The Whispering Walls by Phil Hickes takes you on an adventure where spirits haunt school halls. A brilliantly spooky new series from the author of Aveline Jones.
These books are available from the Junior Library for nine-year-olds and above to enjoy over the summer!

Thank you - and WELL DONE - to those girls from Years 5 and 6 who acted as guides and hosts last Saturday at our NGHS Juniors open morning.
You were all excellent ambassadors for enthusiastic learning and high standards, and you can be very proud of the amazing feedback which we received from our visitors.
Miss Duce
For our youngest pupils, this week's visit to Twycross Zoo brought their current animals topic to life with opportunities to apply their recent learning. For example, they observed gorillas foraging and eating - thus consolidating what they know about their diet including leaves, fruits and vegetables.
Highlights included seeing a rhinoceros up close to fully appreciate its size, witnessing giraffes stripping leaves from branches, watching an orangutan covering itself with straw and marveling at the sight of a giant tortoise strolling about. What a great day!
Calling all eager photographers! The GSA’s photography competition aims to find the best up and coming photographers in our schools today, and to show the world life through their lenses.
For this year’s competition, the GSA offers girls the opportunity to explore the theme of a bright and brave future for all girls.
Happy snapping, NGHS Juniors - and remember, you have to be in it to win it!
