Reception to Year 6 - don't forget to sign up for the NGHS150 Junior Challenge!
Muslims across the world will gather to celebrate Eid al-Adha this week - the second most important date in the Islamic calendar, following Eid al-Fitr which took place in March this year. This marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca and the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim.
In 2025, the period of Eid al-Adha begins on the evening of Friday 6 June and ends on the evening of Tuesday 10 June.
To our many Muslim pupils and families marking this special time, we wish you Eid Mubarak! عيد مبارك

Year 2 are exploring the topic of flight and in English lessons, they have been diving into poetry about birds.
Just before Half Term, 2C were thrilled to be joined by Mr Brown - an illustrator and published author from our Senior School - who led a special art lesson. He narrated the wonderfully funny Cockatoos by Quentin Blake, and then guided the girls through a 'steps and stages' process to draw and watercolour their own quirky characters in fresh and vibrant hues.
The end results were absolutely stunning, with each piece showcasing impressive creativity and artistic flair.
Continuing their learning about the history of aviation, Year 2 have been eager to discover more about Mr Rolls and Mr Royce, and how their partnership helped to shape the world of flight.
During the visit to the Rolls Royce Heritage Museum this week, they explored how jet turbines work, saw a fascinating range of real engines, and even had the chance to sit inside a Canberra cockpit! One of the highlights was working together as a team to assemble a small engine - an enjoyable, hands-on way to bring our aviation topic to life.

Refuelling halfway through the working day is important for every member of our School community and this is enabled Monday to Friday by our fabulous in-house catering team.
The NGHS Dining Hall continues to offer a wide selection of delicious meals and whilst the parents of younger pupils make weekly choices for their daughters, girls in Years 4 to 6 are responsible for choosing their own lunches. There is a daily vegetarian main course, and from Tuesday to Friday there are meat options too. If neither of these take the girls’ fancy, then there are always jacket potatoes with a range of toppings and salad. A hot dessert is also available every day, or a choice of fruit and/or yoghurts.
In recent years, we have educated the girls about food waste and its environmental impact. In response to this, we have thought carefully about appropriate portion sizes for each age group, whilst still ensuring that girls are well-fed and ready for an afternoon of learning. However we also understand that some will have larger appetites than others, or might forget to bring a break time snack - so we often remind girls that they may request 'seconds' from the counter at any point, or ask the teacher on duty for help.
Our focus is on enjoying lunches together, with girls seeing or trying new foods in the company of their friends and teachers, which they might then choose again. Sitting socially on small group tables also helps to develop girls’ social skills at mealtimes. Essentially, lunchtime is another important learning experience within the school day at NGHS.

What an amazing week of cricket for our Year 6s! First came the qualifying round for County finals, in which they won all three games to claim victory in the round and qualify for finals day on Wednesday 2 July. Next, they played a mixed team at Repton Prep - a tense battle ensued, but they eventually came out on top with 282 runs to 254.
This was a great week for the team who worked well to cope with the loss of two players due to illness over both matches.
Congratulations go to ...

Well done to the intrepid players from our intermediate coaching group who played competitively for the first time this week, against a fierce array of teams from Nottingham High School, Fernwood School, Carnarvon Primary School, St Joseph's School and The Elms. Pippa, Annabelle, Lannaé and Sophie all played beautifully, applying their learning from weekly coaching sessions and coming 7th in a field of 11 teams.
This was also an opportunity for some of our more experienced players - Alana, Aminah, Tala and Aaminah - to offer guidance and support to younger participants, showing them how to play against the clock and offering encouragement between games. Thank you for leading by example and sharing your expertise, girls!

I’m thrilled to share tales from my recent study leave journey - a vibrant adventure taking in Tokyo, Kyoto, Mount Fuji and Hiroshima. This trip wasn’t just a personal exploration; it was a deep dive into the heart of Japanese culture, history and art, offering enriching experiences that I’m eager to bring back to my NGHS classroom.
In Tokyo, I visited the Sumida Hokusai Museum, celebrating the works of Katsushika Hokusai - and I am now looking forward to sharing his techniques at Art Club over the coming months. After days of clouds, Mount Fuji revealed itself to me as the iconic volcano which has inspired countless artists, including Hokusai himself. It’s now clear to me why he dedicated an entire series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji to this natural wonder.
I also spent time at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park & Museum, a poignant reminder of that city's tragic past and its inspiring journey towards forgiveness, and of the peace and reconciliation workshops which we host for Year 5 in Coventry each year. The stories of post-war resilience and hope from Hiroshima resonated deeply, underlining the importance of understanding history to build a better future. There, I learnt the poignant story of Sadako Sasaki and her paper cranes - you can find out more about her in the clip below. This visit certainly deepened my own understanding, and I look forward to bringing these experiences into future classroom discussions.
Below, left and right: I was especially moved to see Hiroshima's Statue of Reconciliation, a replica of the 1995 original which we visit with Year 5 each spring in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral.

On Thursday, Year 1 set sail on a swashbuckling adventure. Undeterred by the stormy weather, they transformed the Hall into their very own mighty ship, teaming up to send secret coded messages like real-life buccaneers. Their brains were also put to the test with tricky pirate-themed mathematical challenges, before they jumped into action with a lively game of Captain’s Orders!
Later, the crew gathered for a cheery carpet picnic, and then crafted and decorated their own pirate ships. And finally - as the skies began to clear - there was more excitement outdoors with an exploration of The Forest, climbing aboard a replica ship, giggling at pirate jokes and daring to walk the plank! 🦜

Well done to the girls from 4M and 4B who - hot on the heels of last month's residential field trip to the Norfolk Broads - deepened their knowledge of wetland habitats on a study visit to Attenborough Nature Reserve this week.
This was a busy, fun-filled day with plenty of hands-on learning, including pond dipping, bird watching and classification, leaf identification and minibeast hunting.
