Our recent Muddy Stilettos review is one of the most accurate descriptions of NGHS that we've ever read, and we couldn't be prouder of our 'selective school with stellar academics that’s forward-thinking, creative and quirky, and in the business of turning out confident, female trailblazers'.

On Tuesday - as part of National Careers Week - Years 5 and 6 met NGHS alumna and trainee solicitor Caitlin Orr (Class of 2017), who now works for Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP. This was a very interesting talk, in which Caitlin described her role in litigation and explained the opportunities open to her in terms of working for a company with clients and offices around the world. And it was especially pertinent for Year 6, whose current topic is Crime & Punishment!
Well done to everyone who listened carefully to learn the difference between solicitors and barristers, and to those who asked Caitlin probing questions about the qualifications and commitment needed to study and practise law.
Mrs Cooke, Head of Careers
Mrs Cooke (right) works closely with our Sixth Form, help students to make informed choices at school and beyond. Her connections across industry and her expertise in higher education - as well as the powerful NGHS and GDST alumnae networks that support girls in mentoring, work experience and guidance - ensure girls go where they want to go and achieve great things in whatever they want to do after they leave NGHS.
Mrs Cooke looks forward to helping with judging the finalists of our 2026 essay competition, for which entries closed on Monday - with EVERY GIRL in Years 3 to 6 meeting the deadline. Well done, girls! 👍
Mrs Crabtree
What a wonderful whole week of World Book Day inspiration and activity! With this year's theme of BEDTIME STORIES, girls of all ages have embraced their favourite story plots, settings and characters, and have delighted in sharing their love of reading with classmates and other year groups.
Highlights of our celebrations have included working with Lizzie Knott, the illustrator of Little People, BIG DREAMS: Harry Styles, making 3D 'chatterbox' conversation pieces about favourite books, reading in cosy dens and hammocks, creating a whole school 'bookworm' display outside the Hall, and story time in assembly with Mrs Crawshaw and Mr Cox retelling their own old favourites, Peace at Last and Rumpelstiltskin.
Our World Book Day competition for 2026 - the Ultimate Wooden Spoon Puppet Challenge - was another source of excitement this week. It was lovely to see so many fabulous entries, which will now be exhibited in the Junior Library - our winners will be announced at the end of next week!
On Friday, Year 5 marked the end of our World Book Day celebrations with a visit to Waterstones. Here, the girls enjoyed a quiz organised by their host and an exploration of the children's department, accompanied by our own librarians, Miss Sannerhaugen and Ms Taylor. Happy reading, everyone!
Mrs Braud and Mrs Wood
Sessions with 6B and 6W's Sixth Form 'big sisters' have now paused until the Autumn Term, so our Year 6 have now stepped up into exciting new roles as mentors for pupils in 3B.
Mrs Bailey's class have very much enjoyed spending time with their new friends in the lead up to World Book Day, and it was lovely to see such enthusiastic interactions whilst the girls read together. They look forward to more encounters over the next term and a half!
Mr Cox and Mrs Eggington
Six girls from Year 5 recently represented NGHS at the GDST Junior Science Conference, hosted by the Royal Institution in London. Selected for their superlative engagement in science lessons since September, Daphne, Hattie, Georgie, Flo, Nihaaldeep and Katharina participated in workshops with other Year 5 students drawn from our family of GDST schools. From extracting their own DNA to testing a miniature crash test car and meeting up-and-coming young female scientists, this was a stretching day of learning - with the icing on the cake being an exciting physics and chemistry show which was livestreamed to Year 5 classrooms across the GDST as part of British Science Week.
Well done, girls. You were super ambassadors for our school and you engaged beautifully with all of the challenges set!

I am delighted to hear that girls have been busy rehearsing for this annual challenge! Keep it up, girls - I'll let you know when and where to turn up next week.
Pupils of all ages can enter our 2026 Pi Day competition on Thursday, 12th March. This is a great opportunity to showcase your mathematical skills, exercise your memory and have fun with numbers.
The objective is to memorise and then recall as many digits of Pi as you can, in the right order. Whoever recites the largest number of digits will be awarded the much-coveted NGHS Juniors Pi Trophy.

Further details to follow - in the meantime, continue practising!

Our Year 6 netball team travelled to Condover Hall in Shropshire last weekend for the annual GDST-wide weekend tournament for pupils in Years 6 and 8. As well as netball, the programme also included adventurous activities such as high wires, abseiling, archery, zip lining and even axe throwing! 🪓 😯
Once again, we were unfortunate to be drawn in a strong pool (which included both of last year’s winning teams), finishing in 6th position with 3 wins and 6 losses. These results meant that we then entered the Plate competition where a further 2 wins and a draw took us through to the B team plate final. Alas, we came up against a spirited Croydon team and succumbed to a 3-5 defeat.
Having played Croydon in our opening game there was clear progress from all of the team, which was a joy to see. Well done to Charlotte, Jasmine, Claudie, Harriet, Maia, Emily, Gabi and Jaime for wonderful weekend of netball!
In other news, a team from Year 5 recently took part in the Nottingham Sport This Girl Can Festival at Harvey Hadden Sports Village. Here, they completed a Zumba style warm up then tried their hand at dodgeball, indoor kurling and a street dance blast. The girls had great fun and saw that there are many ways in which you can take part in exercise and sport, besides the more traditional activities such as gymnastics, football or swimming.

A reminder for Year 4 and Year 5 parents that the deadline to express an interest in next year's ski trip is 8am on Wednesday 11 March. This will allow us to budget accordingly, keeping costs as low as possible and enabling everyone to have a fabulous trip. Please do email me if you have any questions j.abbott@not.gdst.net
Mr Rolfe
Wednesday was an important milestone for 4B as they took to the stage for their very first year group concert. These events - held from Year 4 upwards - provide opportunities for girls to shine and celebrate their individual talents, building their confidence and resilience, and developing a genuine love of performing. All pupils are involved, not only as performers but also as announcers, stage managers, technicians and even roadies - so lots of scope for stepping outside of comfort zones.
Well done to everyone involved - by taking ownership over the whole concert and working as a team, you can be very proud of your collective and personal achievements! 👍🏼

The submission deadline has now passed for for the Royal Academy's annual YOUNG ARTISTS SUMMER SHOW - well done to everyone who entered their work online at home and then brought it into school for a future exhibition.
6-15 March
This year's House Science Morning will take place on Thursday 12th March. Full details will follow after Half Term, however here is advance notice of two exciting competitions:
REMINDER - SEE DEADLINE BELOW
The annual British Science Week poster competition is open to all pupils, including Nursery and Reception!
In 2026, the poster competition is taking curiosity to the next level! We’re working with a team of scientists and researchers who are curious about what children think will make a good or positive childhood in the future.
Prizes will be awarded according to creativity, content, clarity and engagement.
Posters from our youngest pupils should have the theme of 'What makes children's lives good?'
Click here to find out more 👇
Older entrants should address the question '‘What makes children’s lives positive? What will a positive childhood look like in the future for children your age?’
For both competitions, entries should be handed to Mrs Garton by 9am on Tuesday 10 March - at which point the best five submissions in each category will be entered on behalf of NGHS Juniors. Awards will also be given in assembly.
We are a group of Year 12 students - many of us Junior School alumnae - who have entered a GDST young enterprise competition. Our fledgling business, Nourishing Notts, set out to create a digital cookbook of accessible and affordable recipes for families.
Thank you to everyone who supported us by entering our competition last term, helping us to create a selection of family-friendly recipes from all cultures that are nutritious, economical and simple to make.
Profits from sales of our ebook will go to The Hope Centre, a local charity that supports vulnerable and disadvantaged people. Please help us to raise £500 for this great cause by paying £5* for a copy and emailing nourishingnotts@outlook.com with a screenshot of your receipt. We will send you a copy of our publication by return.
You can also buy a copy at Parents' Evening on Monday 9th March until 4:20pm.
THANK YOU
