Peace and reconciliation

Mrs Crawshaw

Year 5's World War II Home Front topic drew to a close this week with a study visit to Coventry Cathedral and its Blitz Museum.  Here, the girls toured the bombed out ruins of the 14th century Gothic church, as well as the modernist replacement 'New Cathedral' designed by Sir Basil Spence and opened in 1962.

The visit consolidated the girls' classroom learning about why Spence's design was chosen, and it was good to hear them explaining how the combination of ancient and modern still stands as a symbol of wartime destruction, followed by peace and forgiveness.

Highlights of the day included opportunities to view the magnificent tapestry of Christ in Glory by Graham Sutherland, and the famous 'charred cross' made from roof beams that fell during the bombing of Coventry.  The girls also listened to this week's Litany of Reconciliation, and then took part in two very thoughtfully-curated Peace and Reconciliation workshops.

All in all, a great day of learning for both history and religious education - well done, Year 5.

Musical role models

Mr Rolfe

On Monday afternoon, our Year 6 Music Ambassador team delivered a wonderful workshop to pupils from Reception and Year 1 as part of a series of challenges set to develop their leadership within the NGHS Juniors community.

The younger girls were enthralled by the joint singing workshops and they very much enjoyed the concert staged by the ambassadors, staying behind at the end to try out the older girls' instruments.

Reflecting on the success of the workshop afterwards, our ambassadors were unanimous in their POSITIVITY.   Well done, girls!

Year 4 in Northumberland  ☀️

Miss Baker

The sun truly came out for Year 4’s much anticipated History and Geography study visit and field trip to the Northumberland National Park this week!  Their first stop was a picnic lunch at Housesteads, Britain’s most complete Roman fort situated right on Hadrian’s Wall.  Here, they were able to explore the remains of the barrack blocks, commander’s house, granaries and latrines which were part of daily life for the troops controlling the northernmost border of the empire.

There followed a challenging walk along Hadrian’s Wall starting with an ascent of the famous Cat Stairs at Steel Rigg, where the Romans’ determination to assert their authority was demonstrated by the Wall being built straight over a massive outcrop of the Whin Sill.  This was a great opportunity for the girls to test their RESILIENCE on a steep climb, to apply the OS map reading skills learnt recently at school, and to consolidate their classroom learning about the scale of the Rome’s ambition - all within the setting for their current set text, Across the Roman Wall.

A visit to the nearby Roman Army Museum completed Day One; here the girls saw the legions’ mighty armour and gruesome weaponry up close!

After overnighting at YHA The Sill, the residential ended with a study visit to the archaeological site of Roman Vindolanda – a fort and village where the anaerobic nature of the subsoil has led to wooden and leather artefacts (usually lost to decay) being preserved.  The sheer scale and range of 2,000 year old ruins and recovered objects to be seen at this live dig is mind blowing; the girls loved walking down the ancient streets, exploring the reconstructed fort and seeing excavations that are projected to last for another fifty years at least.

In all, two inspiring days of hands-on learning and making memories in the great British outdoors - well done, Year 4!

Sporting updates

Miss Abbott

Congratulations to the following girls who broke school records at last week’s Year 3-4 inter-house gala - some amazing talent and times recorded, so well done to everyone!

Our youngest pupils from Nursery and Reception paid their first visit to the swimming pool this year.  They took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the changing rooms, pool and instructors so that they can hit the ground running when they start their lessons properly in the Summer Term.  Deck access and the moveable floor at Djanogly Community Leisure Centre allows everyone - regardless of age and height - to enter the pool, stand safely and feel confident in the water.  The girls were amazing and - with the help of Mrs Astill, Mrs Brown and Miss Abbott in the water with them - we look forward to seeing lots of progress next term!

NGHS Juniors entered three teams in the annual High 5 netball tournament hosted here, organised by the Senior School PE department, and with our own Year 10 girls coaching and umpiring.  All of our teams played extremely well and finished in first, third and fourth in their respective sections.

Girls from Years 1 and 2 took part in Sport Nottingham’s Infant Agility Festival led by sports coaching students from Nottingham Trent University.  They competed in fun games and relay races, designed to demonstrate that there are lots of ways to stay fit and to be active.

Meanwhile at the London Aquatics Centre ...

Congratulations to Alice and Florence from Year 6 who came 2nd place nationally with their free duet score at the recent Swim England Artistic Swimming National Age Group Championships 2025!

Treading the boards

On Wednesday evening, Years 3 and 4 delivered a truly magnificent rendition of The Wizard of Oz.  With enthusiasm and superb attention to detail, the girls have been working on this production since November, investing time, energy and commitment.  Their efforts were rewarded with two outstanding performances that shone the spotlight on some incredible musical and acting skills.

Mr Rolfe was especially impressed by how receptive the Year 4 girls were to the challenges of their songs, which involved harmonies, intricate syncopated rhythms and complex melodies.  In his 25 years at NGHS, this has been one of his favourite musicals ever staged.

Mrs Bailey commented, "The girls have done an amazing job with learning the complex songs for the show, and I am incredibly proud of them.  Your show was fantastic!"

Mrs McDowell also expressed her admiration:  "This was a magical production, performed by a very talented cast.  It was a pleasure to direct them, and I am excited about working with the girls on future projects."

Following their departure from the yellow brick road, Year 4 now turn their focus to their upcoming solo music concert in the Summer Term!

Many of our parents and pupils will know Miss Spray from her work in Reception, at After School Club and at Breakfast Club:
